Justice for Trayvon – It’s not over yet
The Milwaukee Courier ^ | July 27, 2013 | Marc Morial, President/CEO Nat'l Urban League, former Mayor, New Orleans

“Even though I am broken hearted my faith is unshattered.” Tracy Martin, father of Trayvon Martin

We were stunned by the outrageous not guilty verdict reached by a jury of six women in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. We have been following this case since February 26, 2012 – the day unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon, who was Black, was gunned down by George Zimmerman, a White-Hispanic Sanford, Fla. neighborhood watch captain. With no reasonable grounds, Zimmerman assumed Trayvon was a suspicious person, disobeyed police instructions, followed him, fought with him and fatally shot him.

From the beginning, the Florida criminal justice system seemed to treat the perpetrator, George Zimmerman, with more deference and concern than the victim, Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman was not immediately arrested and for weeks, he hid behind Florida’s shameful “Stand Your Ground” self-defense law, which allows a person to use lethal force against an assumed attacker. Zimmerman was eventually charged with second-degree murder, but soon thereafter was released on bond. Repeated attempts to impugn Trayvon’s character and to actually put a dead boy on trial were rebuffed by the judge. But it was clear from the start that Zimmerman’s lawyers and others were basing their defense on the stereotyping of Trayvon as a dangerous, violent young Black boy who would have killed Zimmerman if Zimmerman had not killed him first. Nothing could be further from the truth. Trayvon was a typical high-school junior who loved sports, music, and aeronautics and was making plans to go to college. On the day of his killing, he was an invited guest in the community and was armed only with a bag of Skittles and a bottle of iced tea. It was he who was being relentlessly followed by a stranger. He was scared...

Oh my gawd!

That white man done murdered a budding AEROSPACE ENGINEER.

Trayvon had missed 53 days of school from August to February, a lot of it because of the 3 suspensions he'd gotten in 4 months.

That put him on track to miss about 75 days out of his junior year in high school.

I guess that's the new pathway to college and a successful career afterward.

The evidence showed pretty much the opposite of what this guy wrote. Exploiting a tragedy to stir people up who, though they are misguided to do so, trust those who are making these outrageous assertions when there is no evidence to support their comments and plenty of evidence to contradict it. “White Hispanic”? Actually from his family heritage he would be a “White-Black-Hispanic”. The other people Zimmerman was known to have reported have all been white up to that point - so there is no evidence to even suggest this was a case of “profiling” - yet this author just makes it all up as he is going along. There is no evidence to support anything this author is writing, and in case he didn’t know, you can’t “assume facts not in evidence” in a court of law.

They should have been “closed” when the decision was being made to publish this nonsense.

The biggest problem that blacks have, is that chip on their shoulder the size of a house, of course put there by Sharpton and guys like this. This leads to unbelievably bad manners that I see daily. Of course they don’t get along with anybody, they are rude and disrespectful.

2DV..I am lousy at math. ;)

I was really referring to the endless pot stirring over a matter that should have long since been put to rest.

I have a friend that goes on..and..on..and on about things.

In the immortal words of her husband..Move On. :)

Fundamentally, the author misunderstands the meaning of justice, as well as the reason for the proceedings.

The crime regards the taking of a human life. The charges are between the State and Zimmerman, not Trayvon. This is why the person accused is charged by the State. Even had Zimmerman been found guilty, the charges do not deal with justice for Trayvon. That is separate issue.

We are outraged by the Zimmerman verdict, and while we accept the jury’s decision under the due process of law, we want to assure Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, as well as millions of their supporters, that this is not over. The National Urban League stands in solidarity with the NAACP, the National Action Network, the Black Women’s Roundtable and others in commending the Justice Department in proceeding with its federal investigation of Trayvon’s killing for possible civil rights violations. We beseech the Department to pursue this investigation to the fullest extent. We are also calling on the broader community to express its outrage by using social media, calling elected officials and mounting a dignified, peaceful yet robust response in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Along with our thoughts and prayers, we pledge a renewed fight in the courts, in Congress, in the media and through public engagement to end racial profiling and secure justice for Trayvon Martin

---------------------------------------

It certainly doesn't seem like you respect the juries decision, Marc. That's an awful lot of protesting and calling for another trial for a decision that you respect.

Justice is an abstract thing, and abstract things are beyond the grasp of the author, who apparently can see only his own (racial) group.

In my general neighborhood, there are "Justice for Aya" posters seeking a reward for the killer of a 22-year old, Aya Nakano, who was gunned down on 6/13/2013. No suspects have yet been arrested.

This is a quiet campaign which so far has not yielded any fruit. The family of Mr. Nakano seeks justice for his death. I am sure that BO and his friends neither know nor care about the death of this young man.

Do you know when the hearing is to be held charging the prosecution for withholding evidence? They would NOT be telling these lies if the prosecution. was honest

Marc Morial: "Trayvon was a typical high-school junior who loved sports, music, and aeronautics and was making plans to go to college."

Really, Mr. Morial? Mr. Martin "loved" aeronautics? Seriously?

First I've heard of it. Unless you think "aeronautics" is another term for guzzling purple drank. Because we all know that every aeronautical engineer loves to slam down Purple Lean. Just like Trayvon Martin.

The ignorance and twisted thinking of this writer is simply astounding!

Morial was one of ACORN's first success stories. He's also the reason that Ray Nagin was initially viewed as a welcome reformer in City Hall.

Marc Morial thinks there is some money to be made on this Trayvon matter. That's why he started flapping his lips on the matter.
