SAN BERNARDINO -- A month after California began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples once again, gay couples can get married, get divorced and even get cold feet.
A planned mass "Rainbow Wedding" ceremony at a gay community center in San Bernardino ended Saturday with the officiant being stood up at the altar when no one showed up more than an hour after the ceremony was scheduled to be held.
"It's a statement about equality," said P.J. Seleska, who runs Inland Empire Pride's Center on Waterman Avenue. "We had a big celebration" the night the Supreme Court struck down Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act "and kicked around ideas."
The center serves an impoverished region of the
city, and includes a food pantry and other services to help its largely poor clientele.
"It's so expensive to get married out there, are you kidding me?" Seleska said.
Marriage licenses alone cost $88 in San Bernardino County.
"Now I understand why people run out to Vegas," Seleska said.
The center also planned to give donated presents to any couples who turned up to get married on Saturday.
Christine Sanborn, the youth adviser for Inland Empire Pride, was standing by to serve as an officiant. She's an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church.
"We had a couple of people who said they and their partners wanted to get married today," she said.
Even though the planned mass wedding didn't happen, the center and Sanborn will be available for weddings in the future.
"We don't know if we'll have all the trappings and garb" that decorated the center's lobby on Saturday, Seleska said, "but we'll spiff the place up."
Quite a coincidence.
Zappa’s my all time favorite song writer and guitarist followed closely by Captain Beefheart.
I know, I’m a little out there but I’m a musician who plays all kinds of music.
Thanks for posting that.
wow...he was quite a writer..odd at that!
I think they offered free services and officiating and the hall expecting a lot of gays to jump at the chance to ‘tie the knot’ in a mass wedding so they could bask in the publicity.
I guess reality sunk in and they ended up with zero participants.
Cracks me up!
It’s not about homosexuals being able to marry, it’s about the continuing effort to destroy traditional marriage.
Frank Zappa was a brilliant musician, but those lyrics leave a LOT to be desired. Bet they go great with the backing tracks, though. The man was a genius.
I know, Im a little out there...
I was about to say.....you've got really eclectic taste in guitarists. I came of age in Zappa's heyday, and have always admired his musical skills, but I'd never rate him in my top ten.
But, who can account for taste anyway? Frank and the Captain were both fine musicians who contributed something very unique to that era.
As evidenced by this gay wedding flop, and I’ve never heard of P.J. Seleska, but I suspect belligerent gay indoctrinators are not taking no for answer with respect to trying to get people to commit to gay marriages.
Truth be told, I think I only heard him a couple of times back in the 70s. Late night rock station stuff......I barely remember it.
I should go to YouTube and refresh my memory. Who knows - maybe I'll agree with you after a listen :-)
I loved that album ‘Weasels ripped my flesh’ but if you didn’t ‘get’ Beefheart I’m totally fine with that.
Disinterest...
Hard to find bakers and photographers that normally service large-scale, indiscriminate ceremonies.
P.J. Seleska , who runs Inland Empire Pride's center, waits
at the center Saturday for same-sex couples to arrive to be married in San Bernardino.
He's a sodomite. God forgive him
With nobody showing up, I wonder if most gays were really for gay marriage or if it was a media story that was exaggerated by the small minority as always. On Facebook, my so called friends who shouted for equality in marriage were the straights who were married already. I think this gay marriage thing was a trend for the straight people to do something. Just a thought and I have no proof of this but just an observation.
Does the “bride” at a homosexual wedding have an AID of honor?
Either that or there was a local cornhole tournament.
