On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin and his father were visiting his father’s fiancée in The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, Florida. George Zimmerman, a resident and community watch captain, noticed Martin wearing a hooded sweatshirt in the rain inside the community. Zimmerman called the Sanford Police Department to report Martin’s behavior as “suspicious.” According to a police report, “there is no indication that Trayvon Martin was involved in any criminal activity at the time of the encounter.” Zimmerman was told by the Sanford Police dispatch the police were on their way and not to pursue Trayvon. After the phone call concluded, Zimmerman left his vehicle and began following Trayvon. An unarmed 17-year old wearing a “hoodie” who only had an Arizona fruit drink and Skittles that he purchased in his possession. Zimmerman confronted Trayvon. A fight ensued between Trayvon and Zimmerman. The encounter ended with Zimmerman fatally shooting Trayvon once in the chest at close range. Trayvon was pronounced dead on the scene . Zimmerman was briefly taken to the Sanford Police Department that evening but was not charged. The initial decision not to charge Zimmerman was based on Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law. Zimmerman was finally charged on April 11, 2012.

Verdict of not guilty has been reached.
