Racial and ethnic insults were flung around pretty widely in the past and not necessarily aimed at just one group. Italians soldiers were referred to as ‘gooks’ in WWII by some U.S. troops, before the word was generally associated with Asians (this recorded by Ernie Pyle). Heck I was once called a nigger boy by a little old lady watering her lawn when she asked why the guys on my team allowed me to play on their team. Once I was rafting in the Pacific off Leyte after the shooting was over and a flotilla of ‘gook’ canoes came by and started jabbering to meas if I was one of them. Dark skin can tan very dark almost to black.
