The asset forfeiture laws are insane. I knew we were in trouble when the government ruled it could take funds to prevent drug dealers from paying their lawyers. It makes a mockery of due process and the right to council, and the Fourth Amendment.

Looking forward to seeing how the Department of Justice under the biggest gun runner of them all Eric Holder handles asset seizure. After all, the Rule of Law pertains to all citizens does it not?

God is not amused, as how they judge, is how they shall be judged. By their own mouths they stand condemned.

It was the Reese’s assets that the government was going after in the first place. It was no accident that they were targeted, the government knew they had a considerable amount of property and the agents involved stood to make a tidy amount in the form of “bonuses” which are based on how much they property seized is worth. The whole thing stinks and even if they are acquitted they still have to prove that the property was acquired through legal means, which may be hard to do since from what I hear the government managed to destroy most of the business records during the raid. Welcome to the police state of Amerika.

After reading down toward the end, where the author states that the government has the assets to fight this battle forever.

How about a federal statute, limiting the amount of funds to be used on cases. Give the feds a certain amount of money, depending on the crime, if they go over and need more, they have to go to the court for it with a damn good explanation. Not just, we suck. We haven’t been able to prove our case beyond reasonable doubt and now we just want to bleed the defendants dry until they give up or go broke.
