A federal judge has ruled that Nebraska cops must return over $1 million confiscated at a traffic stop from a woman who saved the money $1 at a time during her 15 year career as an exotic dancer.
The money belongs to Tara Mishra, 33, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., who began putting aside her earnings when she started dancing at age 18, according to an opinion U.S. District Judge Joseph Bataillon wrote last week. The money was meant to start her business and get out of the stripping business, the judge wrote.
State troopers confiscated the money in March 2012 when they pulled over Rajesh and Marina Dheri, of Montville, N.J., for speeding in Nebraska, according to court documents. The Dheris are friends of Mishra and had been given the cash so they could buy a nightclub in New Jersey. Mishra would own half of the business and the Dheris would own the other half...

The other question is: at what point would she stop scrimping and stripping if she had enough in the bank. You would think it would be before $1 million dollars. If one had $250k or %500k in the bank, would you keep eating ramen and stripping? If true, I guess she realized she had a limited amount of time, and she had to make all she could. While I don't applaud her career choice, if she truly saved it, that's impressive.

Yesh but that is only if you don’t spend any of it.

I'm getting ~$191.00/day, for 15 years, excluding Thaksgivinig and Christmas, adding back in leap days, and figure 2 weeks vacation a year.
I don't know if that's reasonable either. I never go to places like that...
I though I recalled seeing that's how she proved that the money was hers. She paid taxes on it.
Mishra appeared at a trial with tax returns and documents proving she'd agree to invest in a New Jersey club with the Dheris.
She'd wrapped the cash in dryer sheets to mask its rank, barroom scent, she argued.
On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Joseph F. Bataillon ordered the cash returned to the former topless dancer, saying the government's suspicions about a drug connection "left too many unanswered questions."
Interesting. Also interesting that each dollar was put there totally willingly, not like when you get hit up for cash to park your car at some event. None of those guys were roped into putting the dollar there.

I was just applying some “farmer math” to see how reasonable the numbers were.
Based on comments on the thread, plus the fact that she is in prosperous California, I’d say it’s within the realm of reality.

You all have a valid point about the IRS, because it has proved itself to be a lawless government agency. They'll probably be able to get around the fact that she actually paid taxes on ALL of it, as shown in my post #38 above:

She is very, very lucky to get her money back. Usually when a citizen is so unfortunate as to fall into the control of bad, corrupt cops... the citizen’s valuables just disappear forever.
(I very much respect and am thankful for good, honest police... the above comment is not about them.)
I imagine that the State of Nebraska considers that to be a mere technicality. After all, they seized it at gunpoint, fair & square...

Some observations:
1. Wow, hand $1,000,000 over to a friend to drive it to NJ. Sounds like Indian names, if so; very trustworthy culture.
2. On most traffic stops, cops should not have dogs with them. Saying no to a search is always an option.
3. The “state” should pay interest to hold the cash.
4. What were the sellers going to do with the cash? Deposits to a bank account risk IRS audit.

she had to “claim” a specific amount in tips each year for tax purposes and obviously she did.
“A friend of mine” knows, I mean knew, a few strippers, and depending on where they work, they can easily make several hundreds of dollars per day. Most of them p*ss that money away however on drugs and expensive lifestyle accouterments.
Someone posted a cite from the judge's full opinion: she did indeed pay state and federal taxes. It also established the money came from a legitimate source.
How much of the million in tips she took in did she pay taxes on?
Hopefully none of it... the last the federal and state giverments need is MORE MONEY...
