Pelosi: Obama jobs plan presentation to House Dems ‘masterful’ By Russell Berman - 07/31/13 12:39 PM ET
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) described President Obama’s presentation of his jobs plan to Democrats as “masterful.”
She also said Wednesday’s powwow between Obama and her caucus was a “very enthusiastic meeting.”
“I saluted the president as the persistent president," Pelosi said.
During the meeting, Obama lashed out at criticism of former economic adviser Larry Summers, a possible successor to Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke.
House Democrats also have raised concerns about the implementation of the 2010 healthcare law. Members said the topic came up during the meeting but didn’t dominate the discussion.
“We all agreed that nothing succeeds like success,” Pelosi said of the healthcare law and its lingering unpopularity.
Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Obama joked at the top of the meeting, “I’ll miss you guys in August.”
Much of the meeting, Israel said, was about coordinating the party’s message as Obama travels the country and members return to their districts for the five-week recess.
“He wanted to make sure members of our caucus understood what his messaging would be, what his work is, so that we can continue to cooperate,” Israel said.
Obama, Israel said, told the caucus that, “if it means anything to be a Democrat, it’s fighting for folks who aren’t looking to appear on ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.' "
Democrats applauded when Obama reiterated his vow not to negotiate with Republicans over the debt ceiling and put the nation’s “full faith and credit” at risk, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said.

Before wrapping up his address to congressional democrats, Obama said,”Remember, we are only here because of a coalition of takers and low-information voters. We need to do all that we can to keep them dumba$$es.”
