GOP Rep. Tom Cotton to take on incumbent in Arkansas’ US Senate race, source says
Associated Press ^ | July 31, 2013

Arkansas Republican Rep. Tom Cotton plans to announce his bid next week to challenge two-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor in next year’s elections, according to a person familiar with the congressman’s plans.

The person who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday was not authorized to speak publicly about the planned announcement and spoke on a condition of anonymity. But the freshman congressman has scheduled an event Tuesday with supporters in his hometown of Dardanelle.

Cotton’s entry will set up a heated and expensive fight for a U.S. Senate seat that Republicans believe is prime for a pickup in 2014, with groups on the right and left already waging a television ad fight in Arkansas. It also creates a domino effect, with several Republicans now eyeing Cotton’s seat in the U. S. House.

Cotton was elected to the U.S. House in 2012, to the open seat formerly held by Democrat Mike Ross. Ross is now running for Arkansas governor.

Cotton, 36, is a former management consultant who served in the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan. . He was elected to the 4th District in November, after racking up endorsements during his primary bid from national Republican leaders including U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona and conservative groups such as the Club for Growth.

This is great news. Tom Cotton has star quality and if he avoids serious mistakes on the campaign trail, we’ll score a pickup.

Yep!

It is now Cottons seat to lose.

Long as he doesn’t make any huge mistakes along the way, this seat is his.

Oh boy I can predict the things things the race hustlers are going to say about a white guy with the last name “Cotton” from Arkansas

Is this guy for real?

Seems like a security state O’Bama apologist ala Juan McLame and Linsthee.

Asking, I very well have been misinformed. After all, I do live in Amerika

Pryor is another politician who got his job because his daddy was a senator. I hope Cotton cleans his clock.

Cotton is a good man. He is an OEF and OIF Vet, and my Representative here in Polk County AR. He is a good principled conservative. I hate to see him leave as my Congressman but it will be a plus when he defeats the leftist progressive Pryor.

Tom Cotton will become a star in the Senate. Mark Pryor will become the first Senator in history to be defeated after having been elected without major-party opposition in the previous election.

His views of amnesty would matter to me if I lived in AR as well as the NSA spy program.

“Endorsed by John McCain” is not a badge of honor.

Certainly not but prominent politicians like McCain endorse scores of candidates. It doesn't mean they're all bad. Cotton was the consensus pick for that House seat. Everyone seems to like him a whole bunch.

Lugar can't be the first Senator to lose his primary after having not had a major party opponent in the last general election. I'm certain that happened several times in the one party South back in the day.

I don't know of a case where a Senator lost the general election after having been unopposed (by a major party, Pryor faced a Green) in the last one.

Anyway, excellent news. This is a must win.

Cotton politely called out Boehner on amnesty.

I dont know if Pryor-Schumer would want to attack him on immigration because Steve King is the moderate on this issue. 17% of Republicans think the GOP is too strong on immigration.

They still need 60 votes to start a war. Cotton isn’t going to get in the senate and convince the Libertarians and liberals to start a war. But he will be the 41st or 51st vote against amnesty and leftwing judges.

The problem with Rand Paul is if he were to attack profiling of muslims.

The GOP-E politicans use our resentment of Obama to drive their campaigns and don’t take real action once they are elected to do anything like balance the budget immediately, not five (Rand Paul) or ten years (Paul Ryan, Pat Toomey) down the road.

Its all emotional symbolism with no willingness to stop amnesty or make government smaller in any way shape or form.

That NSA spy program would be a good place to start.

I half trust Rand Paul and no trust McConnell or Toomey or any of the other business as usual types.

McCain is endorsing Cotton in part because he wants to make nice with conservatives, partly because Cotton is a fellow veteran.
