In Newtown, Gun Permits Surge After Shooting (FReeper quoted)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 1, 2013 | JOSEPH DE AVILA and ALISON FOX

NEWTOWN, Conn.—The number of people seeking permits to buy guns has surged in this town following the December massacre of schoolchildren by a local man, even as the parents of some victims had urged stricter weapons laws nationwide.

Through July 24, more than 200 people in Newtown have received new local pistol permits, according to a review of local records, surpassing the 171 new permits issued for all of last year. Such permits are prerequisites for Connecticut permits that allow people to purchase and carry pistols as well as rifles or shotguns.

This article originated via Free Republic! I was contacted here on FR by a WSJ reporter and passed it along to my pro-gun FReeper friend in Newtown, who's been featured in various stories back in February as a mis-labelled "Sandy Hook Father."

Bill also spoke at an April CCDL rally in Hartford, reported by David Codrea in the Examiner, where he called out various tragedy-exploiting politicians.

Supposedly Piers Morgan wanted Bill on his show back in March, but cancelled at the last minute.

Others say the surge in guns—in Newtown and statewide—is troubling. "If you look at how many guns the Lanza family had in their home and what that led to, it's a recipe for disaster," said Dave Ackert, a Newtown resident and founder of gun-control advocacy group Newtown Action Alliance.

If you look at how many guns the school had, at what that led to, it's a recipe for a repeat of the same event.

Count on the Associated Press to demand a list of the names and addresses of gun permit holders...

School security here has only slightly improved since Sandy Hook, but they all remain very soft targets for a determined lunatic.

I say the REAL recipe for disaster is those deadly-to-all "gun free zones."

Not that I disagree, but NY's Sullivan Law dates to 1911, and gun control laws in the South date back to the nineteenth century. Connecticut may require permitting -- but North Carolina requires pistol purchase permits, too.

The reality you point is disheartening.

Gun control efforts aren’t new. I live in Newtown CT and I have been part of the local dialogue for a while.

I do NOT support background checks in any form whatsoever. I passed them, and I carry - But I don’t support ANY initiative to limit a right.

I have also had MANY conversations with folks who claim to own and love firearms, yet call out with their infamous “Buuutt...... “ statements. Evaluating mental capacity to own and carry a gun only puts us on a slippery slope for the government to declare WHAT mental condition disqualifies: And EVERYONE will be disqualified.

A veteran friend of mine, who sacrificed limbs in 2 deployments is a prime example. He collected historical guns - Didn’t even carry. Had a carry, but chose not to. While at the CT VA hospital for a check-up, the doctor asked how he was doing. He replied “Eh, you know. Another day closer to death”. All of his firearms were confiscated.

And this guy is WEALTHY. Utterly no signs of depression or imbalance. Happy as a clam.

I reject the notion that ANYONE is going to tell me that they love our 2nd amendment, but will accept the slightest limitation on it.

No permit, no licence, no permission and no regulation. Until that happens, I fight efforts and culture tooth and nail.

There are rights, then there are permits. You can’t have both.

“I can understand background checks, but permits for owning a weapon - BULLSHIT!!!”

In effect, they amount to the same thing. With a background check, you are asking the government for permission to buy a weapon. By making this requirement to get permission to buy a weapon universal, it becomes permission to own a weapon.

Background checks that required and demanded that no records be kept of the check (defacto registration) were rejected by all those who are pushing “universal background checks”.

Universal background checks are a “bait and switch” game.
