Japans Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso has retracted remarks suggesting that the country could learn from Nazi Germanys constitutional reform.
Mr. Aso said on Monday Japan could learn the technique Nazi Germany used to change the Weimar constitution.
The remarks come amid debate in Japan over its pacifist constitution, which restricts the military to a self-defense role.

A 72-year old man telling others to hurry up and die?
I guess he exempts himself.
I guess the LDP is shooting itself in the foot again?
What he meant was that Japan needs to find a way to change the Japanese constitution in a way that would permit certain kinds of defense; air-to-air refuel, use of nuclear subs, etc.
That’s what he meant. He didn’t mean, “become nazi Germany”.
Sure he did.
Japan is confronting Chinese imperialism as the Chinese are laying claims to the Senkaku Islands, Okinawa, and they’re also demanding navigation rights through Japanese territorial waters for Chinese submarines.
That the Japanese want to alter their pacifist constituion in order to meet this aggressive threat makes perfect sense.
Better rethink that. They already know that China’s rise is due to the USA trading with them, so if they get their military back, there will be nothing to stop them turning on the USA.
Aso knows that too, which is why he came out with the reference to Nazi Germany.
I’m not too keen on the argument for allowing former WWII enemies to rearm for the sake of the USA withdrawing from the international obligations it now wants to abandon due to being (fatally?) infected with liberalism and misplaced pacifism.
I’ll bite —what new things was he calling for, then?
Widespread persecution of all Japanese Jews, perhaps...?
He was maybe proposing that Japan lay claim to the Sudetenland, per chance..?
Don’t excuse his use of rhetoric referring to the Nazis, please. He spoke what is on his mind.
I’m less worried about Japan attacking us than China. And Japan is more concerned about China attacking them than they are comforted by the thought of the USA defending them.
If Japan and China traded shots over Okinawa do you think for a moment that Obama would do anything about it? I don’t and neither do the Japanese.
The mention of Nazi Germany bespeaks other motives, though. That was deliberately anti-American in a very broad sense. Not to mention Aso’s rather callous continuity, being a man who thinks nothing of telling the elderly to “hurry up and die”. Remember, as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.
Forgive me if I have my doubts as to the veracity of what he’s being reported as saying. The Japanese media is leftist and pacifist and smearing a nationalist is not beneath them.
Likewise, I don’t believe that Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her front porch no matter how many times that crap gets regurgitated in our enemedia.
In what ways is Japan similar to Nazi Germany..?
Tell me.
You’re going off the rails here. I never made such a claim about Japan. Aso, however, as a politician, does have to justify his character here.
Well, I’d like to see how any facts are misrepresented or how the man may have been misquoted. There is no good context you can put a mention of Nazi Germany into, nor a call for elderly to speed their own demise, both of which Aso is on the record as retracting.
