LOL! I live in a rural area and you wouldn’t believe how many homes I see with pole barns, bigger than the houses the people live in. Cracks me up.

We discussed having our sons build themselves a cabin in the back yard, to get them out of the house, but the law says you have to let your minor children sleep inside. Very annoying.

schoolers do so much better. Virtually all have a mother and a father who are living together.

Hmmmm could it be.....

The kids will become self-teaching at some point, about junior high age. Mine did, and it has served them well.

There’s nothing holding back someone who knows how to teach themselves anything they want or need to learn.

A big part of the reason for the high scores is that home schooled kids have exceptionally knowledgeable and talented faculty.

That is not necessarily true. My kids knew more in junior high than I graduated high school knowing.

Homeschool parents don't need to be smarter than their kids. They can learn as they go too. I did. And I'd lay money on the fact that every homeschool parent on this board would say the same thing.

This idea that parents need to know everything before they can teach it is a totally fallacy. My kids and I learned some stuff together as we worked through the lessons.

Just because they are adults, doesn't mean that the parents can't learn too.

But how many parents are qualified to teach higher level math, physics, and chemistry? Don’t expect every family to be able to pull their kids out of school and home school them.

I'd say most are not but again, you are completely unaware of the options out there fro homeschool parents to avail themselves of in subject areas where they are not proficient.

You way underestimate the motivation of homeschoolers to provide where they are lacking.

Nobody said the parents have to do it ALL.

Nature abhors a vacuum or something like that.

Hey, if any one wants evidence for the 2nd Law of thermodynamics at work, all they have to do is come to my house (more specifically, the barn)

It's WORK to keep the place clean. I've never seen the house spontaneously clean itself up.

Go for it. The law says you have to let them sleep inside. That is presuming they want to.

So provide a bed in their rooms for them and let them sleep outside as often as they wish.

You've got the place for them to stay. What are you supposed to do? Chain them to their beds every night?

But they will be inside, once they build the cabin. That sounds like a fun project.

How many government teachers are unqualified to teach math of any kind, or chemistry, and physics?

Answer: Likely lots!

I agree with that analysis. How many Blacks get homeschooled? Or Hispanics. Leroy can’t read is not news.

But overall my guess is that homeschooled kids probably do test somewhat higher. They enter and complete college in extremely high numbers.

OK Tax-chick, I gotta know (because I’ve dreamed of having a purple Challenger -— the old muscle car kind — my whole life).

What kind of purple car do YOU have?

Regards,

PS: I am also mom to one Catholic schooled son and one home schooled son, and I have to agree: the homeschooled kids come almost universally from large families of modest means. I know one family (of 9 kids) who is quite wealthy. Most others are comfortably middle-class, and a few struggle financially. We all try to help each other when needed. The kids are great (most of them). Some true geniuses, most regular kids who work hard, and some who struggle. I don’t know any mean or disrespectful ones, though. All in all, it seems to be a wonderful experience for the parents and the kids as well.

Regards,

Dear Tax-chick,

You should have had them build the cabin, and then you and your husband could have gone out to the cabin.

What you'd have lost in creature comforts, you'd have gained in peace and quiet.

I think you’re interpreting my comments wrong. I’m for home schooling if practicable. Whatever is best for the child. And certainly some parents can learn things they thought they couldn’t. But it’s still only going to be a fairly small percentage of parents. I’m a college grad, but I can’t browse through a physics book and expect to be competent to teach it. Or advanced math. Or chemistry. You need trained personnel for that.

I have several firearms and would like to see more people armed. Try to make a good argument rather using ad hominem statements. Good day sir.

I did. The argument is that liberals claim that people are too stupid to learn anything on their own and that the government always has to be in charge of training them. And it is not so. It’s the same with homeschooling. Parents can educate themselves on the more difficult subjects and there are many resources for homeschoolers to use in teaching and info on the internet, available to all. Enjoy your afternoon.

The purple car is a 1996 Mercury Tracer ... little 4-door sedan with a good-sized trunk. My parents bought it for us when our oldest was learning to drive, and it’s on its 4th teen driver now. It embarasses them!

I’m in my 18th year of homeschooling, and I’ve met all kinds of parents and children. Some of the children are extremely talented and dedicated, some are intellectually gifted ... but most are regular kids, with a standard array of ups and downs.

Financially, they run from a few very well off, a large percentage of “middling,” and some struggling.

That’s a pretty good idea, actually. (Bill is 19, so there would be an “adult” in the house with the children ...)

I wonder what it would cost ...
