Late-term Abortion Ban Is Worthy GOP Goal

In a poll done by Gallup earlier this year, the biggest complaint lodged against the Republican Party was “inability to compromise.”

When I read the daily headlines, I see this theme continue.

Republicans, particularly tea party Republicans, are portrayed as obstructionist, extreme, unreasonable, and unwilling to compromise.

But let’s get perspective.

If we are talking about trying to decide what day of the week to collect the garbage, and one wants Monday and one wants Friday, so the side that refuses to compromise on Wednesday might but be considerable unreasonable.

But this isn’t the kind of national discussion we are having today.

Some things are simply true and some things false. Some things are simply right and some wrong.

This kind of discussion does not lend to splitting things down the middle.

Few today would look back on the horrible national dispute about slavery and claim that the problem was inability to compromise.

As Abraham Lincoln put it so clearly in his second inaugural address, delivered while the Civil War still raged: “Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.”

Sometimes worldviews clash and resolution can come only from drawing the line in the sand and one view prevailing over the other.

We are having today a battle for the soul of our nation. There are a number of key areas of our national debate that are about principle, about right and wrong, that do not lend themselves to compromise. This is about which worldview will prevail.

One of these issues is most certainly abortion.

The trial of abortion doctor and now convicted murderer Kermit Gosnell delivered a wake up call to the nation.

The Gosnell trial did for our national consciousness what ultrasound images provoke in a pregnant woman. Graphic pictures of a live child in the womb purge any sense that it is possible to be casual about abortion.

Unfortunately, the abortion issue – the question about when life begins – is often left to dry and abstract argument.

But in the case of late term abortion, like ultrasound pictures, the truth is graphically clear. We’re talking about destruction of a live, feeling human being. The Gosnell trial showed the nation that in American today we have abortion factories where live children are being killed.

The fact that a child of 21 weeks may still be in the womb does not make that child any less alive.

But clear as this may be to some, it is not clear to all. Just as in 1860 it was not clear to all that this nation could not tolerate slavery.

The current fight to ban late term abortion – abortion 20 weeks, five months, after conception - is by and large a partisan battle of Republicans against Democrats.

The Republican House has passed legislation to ban abortion after 20 weeks, with qualifications for the life and health of the mother. Now this critical issue must be taken for a vote in the Democrat controlled Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has called this a “fringe” issue. Murder a fringe issue? Can there be any doubt that we are dealing with a clash in worldviews?

Republicans must carry this bill aggressively into the Senate. Pressure must be put especially on Senate Democrats up for re-election in states which lean pro-life. Democrats like Mary Landrieu from Louisiana, Mark Pryor from Arkansas, and Kay Hagan from North Carolina.

Perhaps this is a good time to recall again George Washington’s words “that virtue or morality is a necessary spring of popular government.”

No, this is not a time for compromise. The nation is confused, far adrift from its moral moorings.

Republicans must grab the reins, aggressively, and provide, without compromise, the moral leadership that this nation needs so badly.

If Republicans really meant that, the last thing they would be doing is passing immoral, unconstitutional "twenty week" "fetal pain" legislation.

The R’s love legal abortion. It keeps the us coming back to them. It’s like the Rats and Racial inequality.

Most abortions occur early in the pregnancy, so this late term thing is a sham and a show.

The GOP politicians are carefully focus group calculating their moves to do it only in places like Texas.

Here in PA our Republican controlled legislature and governor passed abortion clinic legislation only, no 20 week ban no doubt because they are afraid since Obama won this state twice.

The pro-life GOP-E front group hails the clinic legislation as a “great victory” and will use it to promote the re-election of business as usual politicians in 2014.

Reagan said all abortions should be illegal with the rape, incest and mother’s life exceptions.

The GOP is retreating from Reagan with these bills.

Reagan, like many others, came to understand that the Fourteenth Amendment’s explicit equal protection requirement applies to every person, from conception onward.

How does a rape or incest exception square with that position?

I confess to not understand why the GOP wouldn’t be wholly in favor of abortion.

In the abortion issue, the GOP’s opponents have indicated that they’re perfectly happy to remove the next generation of Democratic voters. If the GOP had any brains, they’d encourage abortion among the Democrats, to the point of offering free abortion on demand, with free tubal ligation thrown in for good measure.

I agree, without abortion the 47% would be the 67% right now.

Liberals are evil, vile soulless people. They are a cancer on the human race. The fewer of them the better.

All men are created equal, endowed by their Creator with the unalienable right to live. Even the children of liberals. I think your posts are appalling.

I’m just in favor of giving liberals what they want. Good and hard.

If they want to commit demographic suicide, who am I to stop them?

Someone who cares about the protection of the unalienable rights of the innocent?

Sorry. I view those born to liberal mothers as future potential liberals. I’m perfectly happy if liberal females decide to not have children, and therefore reduce our future unfunded liabilities and crime rates.

I’m all for the mothers having access to Gosnell-level clinics as well. If the mothers die as a result, oh well. It’s just another problem solved.

Your approach to changing minds about abortion doesn’t work much.

My approach causes even the most ardent liberals to blanch and run from the conversation. When they ask if I’m “pro-choice,” I respond “no, I’m just pro-death - if a potential liberal dies in the womb, that’s good. If the mother dies, that’s even better.” I don’t give them rhetorical room to wiggle. By posing the situation as their voluntary self-extirpation, and I’m not only perfectly happy with that but actually willing to drive them to the clinic... they get a serious case of the fan-tods.

Try it some time.

If this is just a “tactic” for dealing with the Left, why do you use the exact same “tactic” posting on a pro-life forum?

By the way, your prior posts aren’t presented as being a mere “tactic,” they are presented as your opinion. ‘Kill ‘em all if their parents are liberals!’

Its an emotional issue that can be used to keep us on the Republican plantation like the race issue is used to keep people on the Democrat plantation.

So we get these symbolic clinic laws and 20 week abortion laws with clauses stating the law separates itself from anyone who goes to court to challenge it because they want an abortion after 20 weeks.

It isn’t much of a tactic if people think you’re just yanking their chain, now is it?

To help the matters along, I have memorized a rather extensive biography of Maggie Sanger. Trotting out some quotes from her in polite company these days is usually quite amusing. First, the audience thinks that they’re from some white supremacist. Then when the source of the quote is given, earnest liberals look for a place to hide.

Especially those wonderful quotes from Maggie about wanting to reduce the numbers of blacks, Jews, Poles, and so on. Wonderful stuff.

So, there you are. You can wonder all you like. I just grin like a hyena when I get into these debates.

Personally, I’d rather like to meet up with that Davis gal from Texas, the one the press is fawning all over. She’s had lots of work done, BTW. She looks nothing like her former self, which wasn’t quite so easy on the eyes. But she looks so Aryan these days, it would be highly amusing to suck her into agreement with me.
