Washington Post to be sold to Jeff Bezos
Washington Post ^ | August 5, 2013

Posted on 08/05/2013 1:40:07 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

The Washington Post Co. has agreed to sell its flagship newspaper to Amazon.com founder and chief executive Jeffrey P. Bezos, ending the Graham family’s stewardship of one of America’s leading news organizations after four generations.

Bezos, whose entrepreneurship has made him one of the world’s richest men, will pay $250 million in cash for The Post and affiliated publications to the Washington Post Co., which owns the newspaper and other businesses.

Seattle-based Amazon will have no role in the purchase; Bezos himself will buy the news organization and become its sole owner when the sale is completed, probably within 60 days. The Post Co. will change to a new, still-undecided name and continue as a publicly traded company without The Post thereafter.

$60,000,000 for fish-wrapping or bird-cage-liner. Wow...this guy must have money to blow. Want to take bets on how long until it sell for less than newsweak?

Yeah, I knew but forgot that. Actually, I was thinking (for no explicable reason) that he made his bundle with AOL (recall those ubiquitous AOL disks?). As I said in #55, it was a case of TBCRTWA. My bad.

You can read WaPo for free on their own site now. Bezos will charge. IMHO.

There's little doubt anymore that the physical newspaper, sold on the corner or delivered to your home, is fading away. That said, the Washington Post is a premier brand name in news (whatever you want to say about their editorial politics) and could easily be turned into the standard bearer for an Amazon news operation that could compete with Google News, and seamlessly integrate with Amazon marketing.

It's a smart play.

Bezos is a faggot? That explains his poor judgment.
But nothing can explain his horrendous judgment with this deal. The Graham family must be in full party mode, lol, while the the Pinch Sulzberger family sits around soiling itself.

Jeff Bezos is not gay. He’s been married for 20 years and has four kids.

Jeff Bezos; the guy who turned his corporation, its data processing software and his data servers - to connect the data-dots about individuals - into service for the Obama election campaign; an unaccounted for in-kind campaign contribution.

If anything, we can expect the politicized left-biased editorial policies of the WashPost to only get worse.

...except Bezos will have cash to pour into it.

He'll need it. I guess this is going to be his hobby.

Yep. Most likely a Boston Globe style operation that tends to circulate only in one city/region and focuses on investigation and reporting on major news stores in that region.

Chump change for Bezos

His Amazon stock is overpriced at like $300+

He’ll just sell alittle stock and voila he now has WAPO

“It will suck to be him...”

I wouldn’t go that far. He’s worth about 25 billion. He bought the newspaper for 250 million. Even if he sunk another 250 million into it (highly unlikely), he’d still only be out ~2% of his net worth. He may lose money on this deal, but he doesn’t have nearly enough exposure here for it to “suck to be him.”
