Al Qaeda Conference Call Intercepted by U.S. Officials Sparked Alerts
The Daily Beast ^ | August 7, 2013 | Eli Lake and Josh Rogin

t wasn’t just any terrorist message that triggered U.S. terror alerts and embassy closures—but a conference call of more than 20 far-flung al Qaeda operatives, Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report.

The crucial intercept that prompted the U.S. government to close embassies in 22 countries was a conference call between al Qaeda’s senior leaders and representatives of several of the group’s affiliates throughout the region.

Several news outlets reported Monday on an intercepted communication last week between Zawahiri and Nasser al-Wuhayshi, the leader of al Qaeda’s affiliate based in Yemen. But The Daily Beast has learned that the discussion between the two al Qaeda leaders happened in a conference call that included the leaders or representatives of the top leadership of al Qaeda and its affiliates calling in from different locations, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence. All told, said one U.S. intelligence official, more than 20 al Qaeda operatives were on the call.

The topic of the “conference call” was: “How to React to the Cheezy Video” that no-one saw.

I understand we've determined the location of their next meeting. They must listen to the Rush Limbaugh show.

Either this is a load of crap, or this Administration is even more stupid than we thought. Well, actually, I suppose it could be both...

Al Qaeda leaders had assumed the conference calls, which give Zawahiri the ability to manage his organization from a remote location, were secure. But leaks about the original intercepts have likely exposed the operation that allowed the U.S. intelligence community to listen in on the al Qaeda board meetings.

“This was like a meeting of the Legion of Doom,” one U.S. intelligence officer told The Daily Beast, referring to the coalition of villains featured in the Saturday morning cartoon Super Friends. The official said Zawahiri announced to the broader organization during the meeting that Wuhayshi had been promoted to “Ma’sul al-Amm,” an Arabic term that roughly translates as “general manager.”

Gosh, yeah. Just like Dr. Evil. Please send in James Bond. Or Austin Powers. Yeaaaaaahhhh Baby!!!!

Are you saying that these writers are tools of the Obama regime?

0bama: "This is why we closed our embassies."

MSM: "This is why we closed our embassies."

0bama: "We intercepted an al Qaeda conference call."

Considering Obama just wrote AQ a check for $500 million, their R&D efforts have probably taken a giant leap forward.

This is fishy. First, we have the scandal with wiretapping phone calls of average Americans, which is much broader than the original NSA program was supposed to be. All of a sudden, we are told that this very program allowed us to foil this dastardly plot (so all you people just simmer down, now). Not buying it. Nope.

Well, yeah, and beyond that the whole thing smells of rope-a-dope to me. Since when does the US Gummint talk about breaking codes, listening in to any enemy, disclosing responses-—on-and-on? My money says the whole story is made up-—as a distraction-—dog wagging going on. And by the way, who the bleep believes that anyone involved with AQ thinks their phone is secure. They have to know that a signal from a phone call can get a missile stuck in the other ear. If there is the tiniest bit of truth to the phone call event it has to be a ruse to see what our response might be. It’s reminding me of the Jap Navy falling for the “water supply at Midway” trick that helped break their naval code before they lost their buttz at Midway.

Meanwhile they do not listen in on any chatter from any mosque and they let Saudi’s fly into the country WITHOUT going through TSA

More excuses to tighten the rope around the necks of Americans and hide what they are doing .

Seriously I don’t believe a thing this administration says.
Think all of this is cover to show they are doing something . It smells of trying to take the heat off of them for the things they have really done that they claim are phony scandals.

Not buying it. This is too well-planned/staged. The government’s not in the business of telling our enemies what we know.

Yep -- smells like an attempt to take the heat off after the NSA snooping story leaked.
