In 1944, the Irgun stopped the threat of bullwhipping by circulating a posted sign threatening to shoot on the spot any British troop who used that whip. Everyone expected a horrible massacre that Yom Kipur, but nobody called their bluff. The whips stayed at the sergeants’ sides, and the shofar was blown.
