Dulcimers originated around 900 AD in Persia. They were popularized in Europe and later brought to North America by European immigrants in the early 1700s. The "Appalachian" dulcimer first appeared in the early 19th century among Scotch-Irish immigrant communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains.
At our brunch party, Old Sarge accompanied his dulcimer playing with some mighty fine singing. His lovely rendition of the classic Irish song "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?" brought a wee tear to me auld eyes.
Wikipedia has a fine history of the dulcimer and how it's played.
Sarge and Bushbacker performed a great finale to our entertainment with some lively jamming that I wished would go on and on. Both guys are very talented musicians in the true sense of the word.
Interesting sidelight....because the Irish represent the second-largest immigrant influx into the U.S., and because the dulcimer is an instrument much favored by Irish/Celtic musicians everywhere, I asked for a show of hands from those freepers with some Irish ancestry and about half the group raised their hands.
(....and, as they say, the other half wished they were Irish....lol).
