Russias consumer rights watchdog, Rospotrebnadzo, banned imports of Ukrainian confectionery giant Roshens products on 29 July, two days after a visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Ukraine, marked by a cooling of relations with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovich.
According to the Russian press, the so-called chocolate war with Russia could cost Roshen an estimated $200 million.
In the meantime, Russia asked Belarus and Kazakhstan, as members of its Customs Union, to ban Roshens products.
The Moscow Times recalled that Roshen is not the first Ukrainian producer to get banned from Russia. Onishchenko stopped the supply of Ukrainian cheeses to the country in February 2012, though supplies were later resumed. As with previous bans, experts suspect that there are political motives for the decision.

Just leave Belgium alone...that’s their pride.
I met somebody from Belgium and that’s what they impressed me with— “you know, Belgium...CHOCOLATE”!
I’ll never think different now. hahahaha
Time for Ukraine to join the common market Russia throwing it weight around again. Natural gas will be next
“Common market”? You mean what the European Union was called in the 1970s?
Sad that the Ukraine has to choose between two authoritarian empires again; but of course, that’s what happens when the USA shrinks off the world scene. Something tells me the Ukraine will pick Russia again, more over commonality with Russia than the west versus actual duress from the Kremlin; and of course, Russia would be vulnerable without their traditional “breadbasket”.
Chocolate!! Oh yeah...but let us not forget their pride in that famous detective, Hercule Poirot.
I have a friend who brings me chocolate from the Ukraine. I hate to tell her that we always dump it. Too spoiled by French & Belgian chocolate to enjoy that stuff.
Gads! Don’t confuse me. Belgium is chocolate...told to me by a...what the L to you call a Belgium person?! lol
Viktor Yanukovich was the ‘pro-Russia’ presidential candidate. This shows that being ‘pro-Russia’ gets you exactly zero.
My wife grew up in England. Our house is a treasure trove of British chocolate (and other British goodies). However, since she’s lived in the U.S. for about thirty years, she also loves American chocolate. So the chasm can be bridged.
Yanukovich is a Russian oriented fanny kisser and he is not well thought of either.
Ukraine has all sorts of issues to deal with but they are making good progress.
Russia is sliding backward under Tsar Vladimir.
They won’t get anywhere under the European Union, who are just as repressive. I know they aren’t all about being under Moscow’s thumb anymore, but the USA retreating on the world scene means that their chance of real independence is kaput.
Possibly. They sure won’t match up with the Chinese, that is for sure.
Ummm...Belgium? And if asked our pResident would probably say they speak Belgiumese.
