A massive fire that engulfed a 40-foot long tractor trailer on the Queensboro Bridge Friday morning has been put out, though the key passageway between Queens and Manhattan remains closed.
FDNY estimates 60 firefighters responded after a truck on the outbound lower level of the bridge caught fire, WCBS TV reported.
The fire was reported at 11:08 a.m. and photos from the scene showed massive flames shooting from the back of the tractor trailer.
Heavy, black smoke was seen billowing from the bridge that connects Queens to Manhattan at 59th street.

The official name of the Bridge is now: ED KOCH QUEENSBORO BRIDGE ( named after the late mayor ).
How many milli-seconds after this happened did the despot Bloomberg issue a decree banning all trucks over the bridge?
I bet this caused as much traffic as when the twice unconstitutionally elected Kenyan would come into NYC every Friday for a fundraiser...ALWAYS during rush hour to assert his authority.
CLOSED. (feeling groovy....)
Bloomie should at least outlaw smoking on the bridge.
RE: (feeling groovy....)
Yeah, that was the time when Simon and Garfunkel sang that song about the bridge...
They keep changing the name of the bridge... or it has so many aliases, you can call it several ways.
The 59th Street Bridge,
The QueensBoro Bridge
The Ed Koch Bridge
or if you are a stickler for complete-ness... The Ed Koch-Queensboro Bridge.
What will Doug Heffernen do today?
Oh my God, talk about a traffic nightmare. They were probably stuck on that bridge for 3 hours.
Terrorism?

Good luck. My grandfather was a stone mason who helped build that bridge. For me, the official name will always be the Queensboro Bridge, and it unofficial name will be the 59th Street Bridge. No offense to Ed Koch but this business of naming structures after politicians is nonsense.
Kind of reminds me of the official name of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Drive. When built, is was named the East River Drive. My parents refused to ever call it the FDR Drive.
The .01%-ers who took helicopters, not so much.
