The liberal group Progressive Change Campaign Committee is going after Republican U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell with a small ad buy starting Thursday that claims McConnell supports cutting Social Security.
The commercial features Kirk Gillenwaters, a retired member of UAW Local 862, who worked at the Ford Motor Co. plant in Louisville. The group is starting with a $21,000 ad buy over the next week. But a spokesman said the buy could be increased if more money comes in through online fundraising.
We work hard for these companies. And were promised a secure retirement in return, Gillenwaters says in the commercial. Our pensions are being cut, and we need Social Security. Sen. McConnell supports cutting Social Security. Hes breaking a promise.
The ad doesnt include any citations on screen to back up that statement.

Beyond the issue of this being the typical nonsensical playbook attack on any Republican as wanting to "take away Social Security", etc. is how disingenuous this dialog is as far as the fiscal crisis facing this country - calls for EXPANDING Social Security - expanding a program going bankrupt is going to start paying out more and more money than it takes in. Undoubtedly the people saying this voted for people who opposed all efforts at fixing these problems over the years. "Worked hard all his life" "secure retirement"? What about those who won't get a job to begin with because of the policies...and the fact SS is not on a sustainable path if it is left the way he wants, or even "expanded"?
We're supposed to reach a "bipartisan consensus" with people who won't admit the problems we face to begin with? Yeah, I know it's a broken record around here to deal with this kind of a scenario...still no less frustrating each time it happens.
Well I don’t know about McConnell but I want to abolish it. It needs to be phased out while it can be phased out
Don’t they see a silver lining in McConnell... he is for the status quo, keeping Ø’care.
Every election season it’s the same blah, blah, blah.
The Republicans want to take away your Social Security. There should be an ad refuting this stance made up of every Dem politician saying this over the last 50 years. Play it over and over 24/7
Hell, I’m for cutting Social Security, and I’m over 60 btw. If McConnell were really for this, he’d have my vote.
Why no outrage when for two years during Obama’s regime there were no SS COLA????
Yes! 24/7!
Maybe adding lots of pictures of prominent Democrats laughing.
My wife and I are over 60 and I'm for it too. Probably have to be phased out over 20 or more years to keep some folks from being too poor to afford the Alpo though. The real problem with phasing it out is that the same politicians who keep screwing the pooch would find another way to keep the SSI deductions coming out of checks and then develop "upgraded" plans from it....
It's past that point. Current Social Security revenue covers current Social Security expenses. If people are allowed to opt out then you can't pay current retirees.
There would have been no COLA during that time regardless of who was in office.
Perhaps they have finally come to see what government promises are worth.
Maybe they should run an ad about the billions cut from Medicare by Obama.
Maybe they should run an ad about the billions cut from Medicare by Obama.
GOP donors with cash to spend like Adelson and the Koch Bros. would rather spend their cash on pro amnesty ads, unfortunately.
