Saudi Arabia on Sunday warned the West against putting pressure on Egypt's military-backed government to halt a crackdown on supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

"We will not achieve anything through threats," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, told reporters through an interpreter during a visit to Paris.

The Saudi official made his comments after meeting French President Francois Hollande, who on Thursday called for a swift end to a state of emergency imposed by Egypt's military authorities.

Saudi warns against pressurizing Egyptian military over Islamist crackdown

Pressurizing? Really? Are there no headline writers at Reuters for whom English is a first language?

Nature abhors a void. As the US begins to withdraw from Egyptian involvement, the Saudis are taking a huge role. They are becoming the new paymaster to the Egyptian army and are subsiding the economy heavily. The Egyptians don’t have much choice. They cannot afford not to pay the military and if the price of food rises, there will be even worse riots. Ironically the philosophy of the dominant Wahhabi in Saudi Arabia is very close to that of the Muslim Brotherhood. However the Saudis see themselves as the head of a new Caliphate and the natural leaders of the Sunnis. Control over Egypt for them is critical and for now they are willing to pay. Should be interesting.

I also call on a swift end to the state of emergency in Egypt by putting a swift end to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Indeed, agree with this Saudi.

Any conservatives, including Sarah, need to back the Egyptian military’s weedwacking back the MB back to size.

The MBs are cutting into Saudi Business, if there is to be an Islamic Caliphate, they want to be the ones running it.

Actually, it's a common usage for the term in Britain, but always ending in -ise

I’m ok with the Saudis supporting them. The billions they spend propping up that economiy is billions that might otherwise go to terror. The Saudis and the whole middle east are getting squeezed by the surge in non-opec oil development, so they can’t do a whole lot of expansion, just tread water.

“Any conservatives, including Sarah, need to back the Egyptian military’s weedwacking back the MB back to size.”

You are out of your mind.

The muslim brotherhood is their problem. Conservatives need to be concerned about repealing Obamacare. Getting involved in the Egyptian civil war is the last thing we need at the moment. The US has no intetests there. If anything, financial aid should be cut off.

We (obama) fomented the Egyptian Civil war.

Ok, since you are the expert, please enlighten us about the downside if the muslim brotherhood takes over. The Egyptian military is clearly aligning themselves with the Russians, so rooting for them does not seem to be very wise.

And BTW, the guy in your signature is also in favor of cutting off aid and getting out.

Only the Egyptian army will beat back the MB.
We can control them or Russia can control them.

You pick.

Cruz is being a total idiot about backing the MB over the military.

Nauseating.

Of course, you are doing the same thing, and it is also nauseating.
