WASHINGTON Born in Canada to an American mother, Ted Cruz became an instant U.S. citizen. But under Canadian law, he also became a citizen of that country the moment he was born.
Unless the Texas Republican senator formally renounces that citizenship, he will remain a citizen of both countries, legal experts say.

SCOTUS has said nothing about Odinga, yet he’s still there.
Vote early and vote often.
It’s amazing at how fast the media found out about this, but took forever to find Obama’s.
I don’t believe dual citizenship is automatic. In fact both nations discourage it.
I believe if you go to the US Consulate site Canada it will confirm.
And I cannot help but think Providence has given us the way to reciprocate the "birther" image to the Libs; the irony!
I’m not sure about the current Canadian situation, but in 1980, our daughter born in Kenya (another Commonwealth country) had dual citizenship, US & Kenyan, until Kenya changed its law after the 1982 coup attempt.
Otherwise, she would have had to choose one or the other by her 23rd birthday.
(no, our daughter was not the instigator of the coup attempt)
WOW- are people in the established party town of DC afraid of Ted Cruz. Is someone threatening their daily animal house toga party? Poor little creatures. They must be terrified of having to find real jobs and getting sober.
Nope, it's not there. Unless you have a source, it will be hard to beleive you.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head.
Ted Cruz for President AND Prime Minister!
I have five nieces and nephews born in Canada in the mid 70’s to mid 80 one American parent one Canadian parent, they all have dual citizenship from the time of birth, it was instant.
And furthermore, the republicans have still not made a mention of Obama's lack of a real birth certificate or which social security number he uses....
One American and one Canadian parent is different than two American or Canadian parents.
What are you talking about? Both nations DO NOT discourage it, in fact, it is automatic.
Israelis, Mexicans, Canadians to name a few have dual citizenship.
I like Ted Cruz, I supported and now support him, I would support his re-election to the senate, but if he holds dual citizenship, he should not become president of the U.S..
Can't have it both ways....I support the constitution. The natural citizen clause was placed in the constitution to avoid folks with dual loyalties.
I understand that it is instant and that at the age of 18 or thereabouts the child that is now an adult has the opportunity to choose which country to remain a citizen of. There are exceptions to this rule for certain countries and situations, i.e. Israel
At least that is how it was presented to me at the time of my son’s birth in Germany.
Under Canadian nationality law anyone born in the country becomes a Canadian citizen regardless of the citizenship of the parents. The only exceptions are children of foreign diplomats.
Cruz is evidently more of an American citizen than Indonesian citizen (still?) Barry Soetoro.
“I have five nieces and nephews born in Canada in the mid 70s to mid 80 one American parent one Canadian parent, they all have dual citizenship from the time of birth, it was instant.”
Exactly. My grandson was born in London to a mother who is British and the father is American. His birth was registered as a British citizen and an American citizen the same day. He was issued an American passport that day.
A baby is a lump of live protoplasm until the paperwork is done to record his/her birth. My grandson was recorded by that paperwork as a British citizen AND American citizen on his birth certificate.
According to Canadian law, anyone born in Canada after 1947 automatically acquires Canadian citizenship at birth.
However, it’s likely a moot point; he acquired American citizenship at birth through his mother, who was herself an American citizen who had lived in the United States for more than 10 years. Granted, perhaps a court should settle the issue once and for all, and in fairness, if Sen. Cruz is genuinely contemplating a run for POTUS in 2016, he should formally renounce his Canadian citizenship.
My brother was born in Venezuela and our parents were US citizens. My mom said he could choose where to become a citizen, and by voting at 18 he chose being a US citizen
