Effective campaign spot, or shameless exploitation of a dead teen?

One month after a jury acquitted George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has released a new ad that uses a dramatic reenactment of Martin's death to call for an end to so-called "stand your ground" laws.

The ad overlays actual 911 calls from Zimmerman and a witness in re-imagining the incident, which took place in Florida. As the video ends, "Martin" is shown lying prone, dead on the ground, along with other bodies intended to represent victims of gun violence in other states with similar laws.

Zimmerman admitted to fatally shooting Martin, an unarmed black teen, but many said he was justified in doing so because of Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, which allows for the broad use of lethal force in self-defense.

"We hope our 'Stand Your Ground' PSA will mobilize new activism on the issue and bring us to a point where our laws are acting to protect victims, as opposed to creating new ones," the group said in a statement.

CSGV also launched a companion website and petition calling for an end to stand your ground laws.

PSA are put out by the Ad Council, a government propaganda arm that was created in WWII. It should be abolished. The government should not be in the business of picking “causes” to promote.

If you listen to most PSAs, they are thinly veiled “progressive” propaganda.

There are a few that most in the country would agree with, but those are in a definite minority.

Is the part of Martin played by a baby faced 12 year old?

It is NOT a PSA- public service announcement. PSA are created usu. by/for neutral public safety. This calling this ad a “PSA” is a ploy by the group.... a political group. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

It IS actionable by some other sponsor group who would take up the issue of the FACTS of the case. To wit- you see the presumed shooter 300 feet from the “victim” , not laying on the ground with the “victim” pounding his head into the sidewalk. This is outrageous.

The ad sponsor is the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. So it isn’t a PSA in any sense of the acronym.

From their website:
“The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) is a 501(c)(4) organization that was founded in 1974. We seek to secure freedom from gun violence through research, strategic engagement and effective policy advocacy.

Our organizational structure is unique among national gun violence prevention organizations. CSGV is comprised of 47 national organizations working to reduce gun violence. Our coalition members include religious organizations, child welfare advocates, public health professionals, and social justice organizations. This diversity of member organizations allows us to reach a wide variety of grassroots constituencies who share our vision of non-violence.”

Along with a particularly large photo and quote of Sen. Chris Murphy D-CT on the site. Cute. Connecticut.
So they should tell Trayvon how he should have been “safe from gun violence” when he was a banger to begin with, with an illegal weapon proven to have been in his possession in Miami, at least.

Of course the thugs and their friends are against stand your ground. They prefer the law which essentially says, “Give it up, cracker, and take your beatdown. Whether you live or die is entirely up to me. You be at my mercy.” But there is no going back, no matter how much they whine.

As the video ends, "Martin" is shown lying prone, dead on the ground They got that part right.

Actually I'm not sure they got even that part right!

I watched this piece of propaganda twice, and it looked to me both times as if its producers portray "Trayvon" in his last appearance crouching in fear, but alive ...

... then the camera pans to rows of other symbolic "Trayvons" ... but they are all lying on the ground in the supine position, not prone.

i’d have no problem if they did a factually accurate re-enactment.
