BEDFORD, Iowa – Authorities say an escaped inmate suspected of shooting a southwest Iowa sheriff's deputy has been killed by a homeowner who said the armed man broke into his house.

Rodney Long was shot to death after he broke into a retired farm couple's home in Bedford about 10:15 p.m. Monday, awakening them. Long, who was armed with a handgun, cut their telephone lines and used their cell phone, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Mitch Mortvedt said.

After about four hours, Jerome Mauderly, 71, shot Long with a shotgun in the kitchen of the home he shares with his wife, Carolyn, 66.

"As the situation wore on the decision was made by the Mauderlys they were going to defend themselves," Mortvedt said. "At 2:11 a.m. the Taylor County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from Carolyn Mauderly."

She told a dispatcher that her husband had shot an intruder.

The state should pay for the ammunition, the cleanup in the house, and the harassment of the retired couple caused by the prison officials allowing an inmate to escape.

I hope he used several shells to be sure the felon was dead. This gentleman just saved the Iowa taxpayers millions of dollars in defending this scumbag in a trial, paying for years of appeals and keeping him incarcerated for life.

Long was serving a prison sentence for burglary and was scheduled for release in September 2014

He won't be getting out in 2014 anymore! Too bad he's going to recover; the taxpayers will be supporting him for a long, long time.

I was wondering the same thing... I was also wondering how after 4 hours the perp allowed the victim access to a weapon.

An Iowa State Patrol officer was nearby and quickly responded, finding Long face down on the kitchen floor, Mortvedt said. No one else was injured.

Don't you just love a happy ending?

The RKBA came in handy in this case.

I am sure a standard 1 and 1/4oz pheasant load at close range works on escaped felons.

What kind of wonky measuring system is used in that mugshot?
60 on one side 63 on the other, 60 is higher than 50, then 69 is higher than 70. Can’t be centimeters.

Not to mention a REWARD.
