Bradley Manning did what he did to impress Chelsea Manning.
Sort of like the motive of John Hinckley shooting Reagan to impress Jodie Foster.
On another level, Bradley was an unconscious double agent who did what he did IN ORDER to go to prison in the hopes that he could meet the girlfriend/lover/self he felt was living and hiding inside him, the Mata Hari known as Chelsea E. Manning.
I had no idea this story would get so psychologically twisted/
