Here's Obama's Ambitious New College Ratings Plan To Make College Cheaper
Business Insider ^ | 08/22/2013 | BRETT LOGIURATO

President Barack Obama on Thursday will unveil a broad plan to lower the cost of college, the highlight of which involves a new ratings system that ties the federal government's allocation of financial aid to the ratings system.

Obama's plan would instruct the Department of Education to rank colleges with their peers, according to new measures that evaluates their success and affordability.

Some of these measures, according to the White House, include the following:

* Access, such as percentage of students receiving Pell grants;

* Affordability, such as average tuition, scholarships, and loan debt; and

* Outcomes, such as graduation and transfer rates, graduate earnings, and advanced degrees of college graduates.

Obama will talk about this plan during two stops on a bus tour in Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y., on Thursday.

Obama wants the ratings system to be in place by the 2015 school year. If all goes well, the government would start allocating financial aid according to the system by 2018 — a time span that would give colleges opportunity to adjust for the new system. Students attending higher-performing colleges could receive larger Pell Grants and more affordable student loans, the White House said.

With respect to aid for low income students:
1) Work to save money for college, then work while in college.
2) Join the military, serve the nation, and use the military education programs to earn a degree.
3) Scholarships funded by private entities
4) Private loans
5) States can set up scholarship funds for low income students if the state taxpayers feel it is a priority. If not, too bad.

The reality is there is not entitlement to a college education. Motivated low income students will find a way to fund an education. Unmotivated students will not.

This is all based on common sense and wisdom. Thus, it will not be accepted by anyone who supports the current Democrat party.

“Stop all student loans. Make people pay in cash.”

That’s pretty much what I did. I did every job imaginable so as not to be on the student loan after the first year. My classmates were in disbelief that I owed close to nothing after graduation. Being a strip club DJ during my college years paid the bills. Today’s generation of American students are damn weak relying on a loan..

Neither will that other top notch conservative college — Grove City College.

For that matter, neither will most of the colleges on this list:

“Outcomes, such as graduation and transfer rates, **graduate earnings**, and advanced degrees of college graduates.”

So, will they have to admit that most Liberal Arts degrees (and “ethnic” and “gay” studies) aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on?

Note to the “meddler in Chief” who lives in the White House:

First, it is NOT your job to meddle into the colleges of America. You apparently got your first American college instruction at Occidental in California—as a FOREIGN AID STUDENT!!!

Second—When you have a ‘student’ like Travon Martin’s ‘girlfriend’ who is 19 years old and just NOW ‘starting her senior high school year’, and SHE cannot READ NOR WRITE CURSIVE, you cannot blame the colleges for her not sticking with the program & being an almost instant dropout.

Third—The Liberals & the Democrats have destroyed any basic education in the USA for the past 40 ++ years. They are misled from Kindergarten all the way thru 12th grade, and are unemployable when they are GIVEN a diploma. They certainly didn’t EARN that diploma.

As a professional meddler, you, Obama, seem unable to stay out of what you have no expertise in.

I know—you DO NOT have expertise in anything other that Community Organizing.

IF I were 52 years old and couldn’t claim that I had any other expertise, I would commit suicide.

You are a complete failure, Obama.

This country will rue the day you were elected, much less re-elected.

I’m having a hard time see this as a bad thing. If these colleges want to take government money, they should do what the government wants.

Maybe Obama can reuse Homeland's color-coded system for colleges. Most universities can start out as Orange and move to Green or Red as they donate to Democrats and hire union workers.

College loves my daughter because she pays full price, because we simply haven’t figured out how to get our hands on any money or discounts.

Well, except for the gift from the federal government. Which of course was eaten up by the big tuition increases that accompanied that “gift” — because government assistance isn’t for students, it is for liberal professors and administrators of colleges.

This “ratings system” will just be a way to fine-tune the federal dollars to make sure they don’t accidentally go to a college that has some level of conservatives in teaching or administrative slots.

We are fortunate to have our child at a state college, but still, $20,000 is a lot to pay for a room and a few hours of teaching each week.

Of course, no law is passed, but now there will be new spending by the department, and a whole new regulation, and money will be allocated differently, and our elected representatives will have no say in the matter.

IIRC, Hillsdale does NOT accept any student that doesn’t pay their own way.

No grants—no student loans—no outside source of tuition payments.

I am pretty sure they have a waiting list, also.

why not evaluate colleges for the type of graduates they produce by degree.

if the school produces lots of engineers/scientists/doctors, you know, the type of degrees that build a society, that school ranks high.

if it produces a bunch of grads in women/gender/ethnic studies it’s evaluated low.

The only thing that’s going to make college cheaper is eliminate government loans and government loan guarantees. When the free money dries up, these guys will not only get competitive all by themselves, but their rates will drop so fast your head will spin, because the only reason their rates skyrocketed in the first place is massive amounts of free government money.

But that’s not the way of big government, “Progressives”, Democrats or Obammunists is it?

To sustain all the goals accomplished by those implementing the communist manifesto, obama has to insure commie professors are well compensated.

On the surface, this does not sound bad. However, I’m sure there is some hidden twist to this proposal that will be detrimental to conservatives.

You should also do this by major, not just by college.

The desired benefits of higher education should be determined by the customers (students), not Washington. In this day and age, there should be no shortage of sources of information for students to use to make those determinations without government interference. Something does need to be done, though, to minimize the effect of government subsidies on skyrocketing tuition. But incentivizing schools to produce politically driven objectives seems a bit more of the benign fascism we are headed toward.
