(WASHINGTON) -- The outgoing director of the FBI gave a sobering assessment Thursday of the current threats facing the U.S. homeland: a biological weapon of mass destruction detonated inside the country and a plane downed in mid-flight are viable scenarios, he said. Mueller added that Americans now traveling to war-torn Syria could bring terrorist tactics home with them.
Terrorism has "changed so much since the days after Sept. 11th," director Robert Mueller said in a rare interview with ABC News' Pierre Thomas.
In particular, Mueller said, the threat emanating out of Afghanistan and Pakistan has now "migrated" to places like Yemen, Libya, Egypt and Syria. In Syria, a near-civil war has reportedly killed more than 1,000 people and is drawing fighters from around the world, including the United States.
"[When] you have individuals traveling to those venues, you are concerned [first] about the associations they will make, and secondly about the expertise they will develop and whether or not they will utilize those associations, utilize that expertise, to undertake an attack upon the homeland," Mueller said. "So, yes, we are concerned about that, and, yes, we are monitoring it."
Places like Syria may end up harboring "radical extremists who want to do harm" to the United States, according to Mueller.
In fact, the FBI has increasingly been chasing what turned out to be dubious threat streams tied to the Al Nusrah Front in Syria, according to counterterrorism officials. Just weeks ago, the FBI was notified of intelligence indicating that the Al Nusrah Front would be launching an attack in the nation's capital during August, but the intelligence and the threat were ultimately deemed to lack credibility.

It could of course happen to any of us. We could just be unsuspecting tourists in Syria and suddenly fall in with the wrong crowd and the next thing you know we are full of malicious intent. We are so easily swayed.
and Obama’s administration will hasten the arrival of said Syrians and their violence, under the guise of “refugees”..he’s already opened that door
If they join with a recognized enemy of the US and actually become part of another’s fighting force, can’t they forfeit their citizenship or green card?
The solution to the problem is allowing these people to become American citizens.
Of course, I'm not stupid enough to expect you to do anything about it.

Egypt now realizes they made a big mistake in their election, a very big mistake and undoing their mistake is going to be nearly impossible.
It probably wasn’t even the Syrian government that used the chemical weapons.....more than likely it was the Muslim Brotherhood using the chemicals and blaming it on the Government. In blaming Assad for using the chemicals, they think we will come in and help them overthrow Assad.
No Christian is safe under Muslim rule....dress up the name all you want, to something like ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ or “Arab Spring”; but if you are a Christian, you are going to die under their rule.
I meant to say the solution is NOT allowing them to become citizens. Letting them become American citizens is the problem.
