Christian Nation? Shrug: Its confirmation of stereotypes about Evangelicals is offensive...
The National Review ^ | August 24, 2013 | Betsy Woodruff

Fantastic news for angsty progressive-ish 15-year-olds everywhere: Finally — finally! — after a wait that must have seemed interminable, this readership has gotten its very own Ayn Rand, thanks to Frederic C. Rich and his debut novel, Christian Nation, a story with all the subtlety of a Slipknot video and artfulness of a Chick tract.

By way of disclosure: I haven’t read Ayn Rand since high school. I read her a lot when I was like 17, and then had to stop because I realized it was making me insufferable. But (bummer for me) I remember her work pretty well, and Rich’s novel is essentially what Atlas Shrugged would have been if it had been conceived by a Freedom from Religion Foundation focus group and edited by Howard Dean.

The basic gist of the story is thus: John McCain wins the 2008 election and then promptly dies from a brain aneurysm. Then Sarah Palin becomes president (the Sarah Palin character in this book puts Tina Fey to shame, by the way) and, in cahoots with those scary homeschool leaders and Evangelicals, sets America on the track to becoming a brutal theocracy where homosexuality, adultery, masturbation, and a bunch of other things are banned. The book’s protagonist, Greg; his best friend Sanjay (a gay man from India who is the new gold standard for one-dimensional characters); and Mike Bloomberg (now the governor of New York) try to stop them before it’s too late. Suspense!

Rich’s book suggests that he’s very, very worried that Westboro Baptist Church or their ilk will win the House, the Senate, and the presidency and then proceed to kill all the gays.....

The " Westboro Baptist Church and their ilk" are DEMOCRATS!

Can't anyone in the media get this right?

Plus, they are a bizarre, inbred cult that represents no one but themselves. If Westboro "Baptist" "Church" represented the political and religious groundswell the left likes to imagine, then I might be thinking about heading for the border. But the don't, and a (God-forbid) out-of-control bus running through one of their demonstrations would pretty much finish them off.

The Westboro Baptist Church is a Democrat black-flag, agent-provocateur operation designed to stereotype evangelicals as wacist, sexist, homophobes and to put Conservative Christians on the offensive ("We're NOT really like that").

Fred Phelps was a spit-swapping buddy of Algore, and haven't seen anything that will change that view.

The things they accuse us of wanting to do to them are their projection of what they want to do to us. Most of us just want to be left alone.

Exactly. And it angers me no end that the MSM consistently fails to report the truth about these Democrat operatives.

Jim Jones or the Moonies have had much more cultural influence and members that Westboro. It’s just an extended family church, if you can stretch the term that far.

Laughably stupid (just like all liberal drivel); easily disproven by two hundred + years of history (more if you count European history) in which American Christians both founded and were in much greater positions of political authority than today.

Maybe he believes that hogwash that all the Founding Fathers were either Deists or Secular Humanists.

The Westboro “Baptist” Church is a Democratic Party operation. I consider it to be the same as the disinformation operations of the Active Measures branch of the KGB.

"Where homosexuality, adultery, masturbation, and a bunch of other stuff is banned"

Clearly, these people have never heard of radical Islam, or Sharia law.

Speaking of that-Can someone please explain how the radical left is planning on co-existing with radical Islam, should they succeed with their evil plans?

Do these overgrown hippies really think the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood, is going to let them live, much less practice/promote their "lifestyles" when all is said and done?

This is actually the only thing that I find amusing about this whole sad chapter in our history-the thought of what's going to happen to these dim-witted leftists when they try demanding "gay rights" exc... from radical Islam- The outcome of that would be hilarious.

Then again, they-MB probably already have a plan to dispose of the leftists the minute they achieve their goals, so it won't even get to the point where they start marching for "rights".

The author of this book needs to check into the left's favorite religion Islam, and write about that.
