Rep. John Lewis: Look to MLK as American Founding Father

Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis -- who as a 23-year old civil rights activist helped organize the 1963 "March on Washington" -- said on Sunday that Martin Luther King, Jr. should be looked upon as one of America's founding fathers.

Lewis said that he "saw hundreds and hundreds of young people" at the 50th anniversary events in Washington on Saturday, and "I said to myself, 'This is it', Dr. King must be looked upon as one of the founding fathers of a new America," said Lewis on ABC's "This Week." "He helped hold us together."

Disagree....though King was an imperfect human like us all, in context for the times he lived he was in fact an American icon...

It is not his fault his legacy has been hijacked by the grievance industry...

I agree that he is a "Founding Fathers of the new America." He,following Gandhi's example exhibited against England, fired the first shot in the continental United States, leading to the ongoing "Third World" conquest of The United States. He along with Gandhi cunningly read the increasing degeneration of the Westerner. He cunningly recognized, the loss of Western cohesion and then struck with so called "non-violence," which merely reflects the growing pacifism of its object i.e. Western Man. Non-violence reflects the growing inability of the Westerner to fight, his inability to take a stand.

I have not mentioned anything about his character, so your “imperfect human” comment apropos of nothing.

Currently MLK day is the ONLY holiday commemorating an individual.

Being a social leader does not compare to fighting a war and founding a government.

It is an insult to give greater honor to MK than to Washington.

Keep your mind open on these things. There are plenty of wonderful people of all races and ethnicity. Make every effort to deal with people as individuals and not just stereotypes. Having said that, don’t accept the ideas of “White Privilege” or collective guilt. Just use common sense when dealing with people. If the situation doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Be alert, open-minded, and prepared. You know all these things already. It’s just good to hear them from someone else when life starts to wear you down. IMHO.

I’m sorry, but I am thoroughly sick of hearing conservatives lionize MLK when they ought to know better.

His speech to the Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, is widely available online. In it, he spoke of “Western arrogance”, and accused our troops fighting in Vietnam of atrocities. He said that the Northe Vietnamese Communists had “justifiable reasons” to be suspicious of the United States, and he said that Communism was a judgment against us for failing to make democracy “real” by removing poverty and injustice.

Also in that speech, King said that the American government was the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.

Now when John Kerry voiced the same sentiments, we rightfully jumped all over him. But for some reason, King gets a pass.

The man was nothing but a leftwing, Communist-sympathizing America-hater who slurred our troops. He shouldn’t be held up as a hero by anyone, much less conservatives.
