A pair of Democratic lawmakers are proposing steep new taxes on handguns and ammunition, and tying the revenues to programs aimed at preventing gun violence.
Called the Gun Violence Prevention and Safe Communities Act," the bill sponsored by William Pascrell, D-N.J., and Danny Davis, D-Ill., would nearly double the current 11 percent tax on handguns, while raising the levy on bullets and cartridges from 11 percent to 50 percent.
"This bill represents a major investment in the protection of our children and our communities, and reflects the long-term societal costs of gun and ammunition purchases in our country, Pascrell said.
The lawmakers say the bill would generate $600 million per year, which would be used to fund law-enforcement and gun violence prevention.

When all I read was mocking of California when we tried and failed to stem the tide of Illegals 9 Prop 187 way back in 1994 ) - I posted that the DNC has won the war.
E V E R T H I N G that the DNC does in Calironia will happen in your community in just a few years. E V E R T H I N G.
Yes.
This will do just what the gas tax does (goes into the general pot for distrubution by the government to what they see fit.) Not to fix the roads, but to pay for Obamaphones and the like.
This will do just what the tobacco tax does (goes into the general pot for distrubution by the government to what they see fit.) Not to educate people on tobacco and defray health costs by tobacco users, but to pay for studies on global warming or the Nevada Spotted Salamander.
Arrest these two criminals before it is too late.
Who are these two leftie backbenchers anyway? Never heard of them. Where’s the heavyweight sponsors for their stupid bill?
They’re looking for showbiz time. Maybe a fawning interview with Rachel Madcow.
Count 'em: That's FOUR major liberal trump-card buzzwords in one short phrase.
Oh goodie, another solid ‘black market’ opportunity a brewin’!
Get a rope
They’ve already accomplished their purpose by driving up prices and driving down availability. The herd stampedes to buy out supplies at the call and command of those two legislators instead of contacting their members of Congress, so some bills like that will pass sooner or later. As seen in contemporary political speech, it’s all about coveting the properties of your own fellow American neighbors and defeating them by hook and crook.
So tax away, tyrants. If the Supreme Court doesn't invalidate your back-door grab, there are a few million gun owners who will.
Oh, wait a minute, "law enforcement" agencies are exempt? Then no way.
There are many cartridge cockroaches, BTW, who push in favor of such legislation to support their price gouging.
Hey when do we get to use this second amendment thing?
Tax abortion. A 100% tax on the service. Two can play this game.
The 11% tax is an excise tax that sportsmen wanted to advance their sport.
These 2 azz clowns are up for re election and want their name in the MSM.
Low informed voters love their free phones and the MSM free gov “cheese.”
Fat chance.
I live in Colorado. I can affirm the correctness of that statement. Combine the illegal invasion with people in the northeast and the rust belt fleeing their fouled nest and presto! Instant Californication of Colorado. Who is next?
Won’t raise squat and the money will be wasted on pet liberal projects anyway.
