Saudis offer Russia secret oil deal if it drops Syria
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | 08/27/2013 | Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

Saudi Arabia has secretly offered Russia a sweeping deal to control the global oil market and safeguard Russia's gas contracts, if the Kremlin backs away from the Assad regime in Syria.

The revelations come amid high tension in the Middle East, with US, British, and French warships poised for missile strikes against Syria, and Iran threatening to retaliate. The strategic jitters pushed Brent crude prices to a five-month high of $US112 a barrel.

Carrying coals to Newcastle.

Offering an oil deal to Russia is not as enticing as one might think. Sure, they might have some interest, but it's a little like Lorne Michael offering the Beatles $2000 if they would reunite on SNL back in the '70s. Sure, everyone likes money -- but perhaps I already have enough of what you are offering.

The Putin-Bandar meeting was stormy...

According to a website that I believe is a Russian FSB disinformation site, the revelation about the Chechens prompted Putin to tell Bandar that if the West attacks Syria, Russia will launch an attack on Saudi Arabia.

Issues with the site's behavior have prompted me to avoid linking to it. Much of the information in this article is at the site with the paragraph above being the only new information.

So Saudi is behind the arab spring. The same country which spawned 19 of the 20 9/11 hijackers. The same country which invented radical Islam.

If Obastard strikes Syria, expect gas to spike to $4 a gallon.

I don’t know if any of this is true, but the telegraph is a serious newspaper, so it’s worthy of discussion. It seems silly to me for the Saudis to admit to their influence over the chechens given the history there. Seems like the Prince may have been a little bit more honest than need be. I still don’t understand why world leaders continue to try to negotiate with Putin. He simply listens carefully to them taking in everything they choose to give away and then goes about doing whatever the hell he wants to do, regardless. It’s a complete waste of time. After over a half century of positive Russia/Arab relations, Syria is the only remaining country in the Arab world that the Russians have a strategic relationship with, they’re not going to walk away from that easily. We’ll have basically boxed them out of the region other than their attempts to woo Iran.

“So Saudi is behind the arab spring. The same country which spawned 19 of the 20 9/11 hijackers. The same country which invented radical Islam.”

I don’t know how you got that from the article. The Saudis have no interest at all in the Arab spring. It’s a nightmarish scenario for them and the other gulf momarchies. They just don’t want to pass up the opportunity to destroy the Assad regime and potentially reign in Iranian influence in the Arab world. They’re exploiting the situation, but I think they’d just as soon have the trend toward protests movements cool down a bit.

This really is a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran being fought in Syria.

I suspect that Saudi Arabia really does want Iran to do something stupid, like attack Israel, so that Israel will be justified in destroying Iran's nuclear ambitions, which scares the heck out of the royal Saudi family.

Yes, it all seems to fit, that the royal Saudi family wants to drag Iran into a real war and destroy its nuclear capability and this is likely what is about to happen, along with a potential world war fought over oil.

Please pass the popcorn.

Assad is a bad man. Worse people will end up taking control once he is killed.
