Israel ordered a special call-up of reserve troops Wednesday as nervous citizens lined up at gas-mask distribution centers, preparing for possible hostilities with Syria.
With the U.S. threatening to attack Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons, Israel fears that Syria may respond by attacking Israel, a close American ally.

I mean in general, it is a sign of Escalation.
The only reason O getting involved in Syria is distracting attention of the US population from the local issues. Regarding your last sentence, Israelis carrying weapons anyway. This is not the first, and unfortunately, not the last time that have to be done.
Call-up of reserve troops is limited.
Whatever happens, Israel will defend its citizens and survive. Dictators come and jihadists go, but the state of Israel is secure.

I was about to post the very same thing.
I agree with you in the sense that it is more demonstrative than anything else.
In a small nation such as Israel calling up the
reserves puts a severe strain on the society as a
whole. It is not done for minor situations, and
because of the effect on the state’s economy, is
not done for very long.
I pray for Israel and our nation.
Let us all take comfort in the sense of security in which Israel has shown itself capable of defending itself.
