Cameron backs down on urgent Syria strikes amid growing revolt

David Cameron backed down and agreed to delay a military attack on Syria following a growing revolt over the UK's rushed response to the crisis on Wednesday night.

The Prime Minister has now said he will wait for a report by United Nations weapons inspectors before seeking the approval of MPs for “direct British involvement” in the Syrian intervention.

Downing Street said the decision to wait for the UN was based on the “deep concerns” the country still harbours over the Iraq War.

MPs had been recalled to vote on a motion on Thursday expected to sanction military action. Instead, after a Labour intervention, they will debate a broader motion calling for a “humanitarian response”.

A second vote would be required before any British military involvement. This could now take place next week. In a statement on Wednesday night Downing Street said that it only wanted to proceed on a “consensual basis” and was now wary about becoming embroiled in another divisive conflict in the Middle East in the wake of Iraq.

The Brits getting involved in this is kind of like a little boy holding Daddy’s tools while Daddy fixes the car.

That problem with such analogy is that it makes one believe daddy knows what he is doing.

In this case the little boy sees daddy crawling under the car that sits on one really wobbly jack.

Didn’t Britain (together with France) do most of the work in helping the rebels topple Gaddafi?

Still, we shouldn’t be posturing if we have no intentions of following through. Even if its the wrong move in the first place, drawing the line, then drawing another line makes you look weak. Sadam got so brave as to finally attacking Kuwait. Wonder how far we allow the Muslim Brotherhood to play before we have to stop them, and to what degree of success will we achieve.

"That problem with such analogy is that it makes one believe daddy knows what he is doing."

In this case he most certainly doesn't.

I doubt it. The fact is, nobody in this country cares about Syria one way or the other. If he launches a bunch of air strikes but doesn't get troops killed or get a ship sunk, nobody will even notice. Remember the blowback and anger over Libya? Neither do I.

Looking back at Obama’s vacillating and stalling on Afghanistan and Iraq along with his leaving the Iranian Freedom protesters to be killed and tortured (one of the most shameful events in recent history), it's really hard to justify the current rush to bomb Syria especially given the flimsy pretext we are working under.

Whoever is pulling this administration's strings sure does seem to want to hustle us into attacking Syria before any of the facts are in.

Those WMDs have been sitting in Syria since Saddam shipped them out of Iraq almost 10 years ago so waiting a few more days to go after them is not going to make or break the situation.

If the US actually does go into Syria to destroy WMDs, I would really appreciate it if they also took out the WMDs in the possession of Al -Qaeda and the rest of the insurgent “rebels”, most of whom seem to be mercenary Jihadi from foreign countries and not disenfranchised or oppressed Syrian citizens .

I am a lot more concerned with the insurgent Al-Qaeda rebels possessing WMDS than I am with Syria possessing them.

Syria has had these things for a decade and never used them, and it's only been a few months since Al -Qaeda captured some that they are suddenly being used.

“The Brits getting involved in this is kind of like a little boy holding Daddy’s tools while Daddy fixes the car. That problem with such analogy is that it makes one believe daddy knows what he is doing.”

Putting aside “daddy knows what he is doing”, the first part of the comment is insulting to the Brits who is our most dependable ally.

Sooner, rather than later, courtesy of Obama and the Democrats, the people [I am reluctant to refer to then as “citizens” since November 4, 2008]of the U.S. of A. are going to see how the Al Quida captured chemicals work.

Practically, perhaps. Symbolically, you couldn't be more wrong.
