elief was tempered with caution in Western Massachusetts on Wednesday as news spread that the Vermont Yankee nuclear power station plans to shut down late next year.
New Orleans-based Entergy Corporation made the announcement on Tuesday, citing the availability of cheap natural gas and the current economy, which has made it less profitable to operate a nuclear power plant.
This was an agonizing decision and an extremely tough call for us, said Leo Denault, Entergys CEO in a statement released to the media.
The company said it will begin shutting down at the end of its current fuel cycle in late 2014.
John Ward, chairman of the Gill Board of Selectmen, called the announcement the beginning of the end.
Theres a lot of hard work which has just begun, Ward said.
Ward, one of many people in Franklin County who have been working to shut down Vermont Yankee for years, described nuclear power as a failed experiment.
We dont need to split atoms to make electricity, he said. Its not economical.

I think this is good. Call me a hippie, but I do not walk lockstep with anyone. Nukes are just nuts.
Things like this are a sign of the rapid decline of our nation. We are nationally committing suicide in many ways. Economically likes this story; culturally like the sick Mily Cyrus public sex act, etc.
That plant worked for years. The greenies finally won, they have been at it since the late 70’s to close it. More kids in that neck of the woods were damaged permanently by hard drug use and or abuse, yet no outcry, rallies, protest or court actions to stop that. I still don’t understand the statist mind....
I don’t get it. Enteregy fought VT in court and won when they decided that they had the final say, not the NRC.
When the environmentalists manage to stall fracking, pipeline construction and overall carbon usage, the price of natural gas will rise and so will the cost of electricity. Green energy will never be economical since the laws of physics must be obeyed. Simply put the standard of living will decline in the United States without nuclear energy.
We can just go back to whale oil lamps, candles, and cutting trees to burn in our fireplaces to cook over and keep warm with. No need for nuclear power, fracking oil/gas, windpower, or solar. (sarcasm fully on)
To further illustrate the stupidity of the hippies in Oct. 2011, CT was hit with several feet of heavy wet snow with most of the leaves still on the trees, knocking out power to 800K+ for up to two weeks.
The hippies were complain about so many people burning wood in fireplaces to keep warm. During the outage, some areas has a haze from all the smoke and very little wind. This apparently was “unhealthy” to the hippies and causing them great physical harm. One power was restored and people began to burn oil and gas for heat the haze vanished and the hippies health improved.
maybe this has something to do with Obama not allowing the Yucca Mt. nuclear depository to open. I mean where will nuke plants put their nuclear waste.
Wasn’t it Dingy Harry that stopped it? Currently nuke plants transfer their spend fuel to a pool to cool, then to huge concrete “dry cask” storage unites on site.
actually, here in Texas, we grill over oak wood quite often. at least 3 or 4 times a week. I like that the fat drips off rather than cooked in it.
I thought Yucca was about the only one. Maybe their only temporarily on site until Yucca opens
I forgot to ask, how much will the average household’s electricity bill increase with the closing of the nuke power plant?
You forgot it has everything to do with that pusillanimous ship dit Jimma Carter in one of the Start or Salt treaties giving Breshnev the gem that we would not reprocess our spent fuel. If re-burned if you will like the French do, our waste I hear would fit in a closet, nevermind needing Yucka Mountain.
We should tell the Ruskies to pound sand on this one as well as a million other decisions in the last 30 years that have made us weaker and less free as a nation, and a people.
Nice
Worse, Combustion Engineering now some other firm was one of our nations major powerplant design and manufacturing firms including nuke plants. How CT has slid from that pride and to now have greenies beeotch about wood power, when their fathers before them in the 70’s took their chain saws, Blazers with a trailer to the woods for fuel to heat their homes to combat the 1st Carter Term. Now we are on the 3rd and they complain about the smell of wood vs. the promise of Unicorn Fart energy from Jimma Carter’s unclaimed son...
our nuclear naval vessels run for a VERY long time above and below the water and we seem to be doing all right with that. Nuclear power plants take up very little spece, do not require miles of railroad tracks to bring in coal, have virtually no emissions, and are state of the art. The greenies and other whackos are afraid of the word nuclear.
Libs always demand we emulate “civilized” France, except for their successful use of Nuclear power.
But "cheap energy" and "prosperity" are even more scary...
