Black man claims he was kicked out of SC restaurant because a white woman 'felt threatened'

A group of 25 African-Americans were thrown out of a South Carolina restaurant after a white woman complained to staff that she "felt threatened," it's claimed.

Michael Brown alleges that his party, which was celebrating his cousin's last day in Charleston last month, waited for two hours to be seated at the Wild Wing Cafe.

But when their time came to order, staff reportedly refused them service and asked them to leave.

"The manager looked me dead in the face and said she was refusing us service because she had a right to and simply she felt like it. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISHMENT... PLEASE SHARE THIS POST... We need your help," he ended.

The post soon went viral and finally prompted Wild Wing Cafe's chief marketing officer Debra Stokes into speaking to Brown.

Okay - I found at least 40 US news sources covering this particular story - going strictly with what the group of 25 claimed...but once again we need to go across the pond for the truth: [via Daily Mail UK]

An employee at a South Carolina restaurant accused of being racist for throwing out a group of 25 black patrons has turned the tables on the customers - saying they were the ones who were using racist slurs.

Michael Brown went public earlier this month with his accusations that staff at Wild Wing Cafe in Charleston, South Carolina, asked him and his 24 friends - all African-American - to leave after a white customer said she felt threatened by them .

Mr Brown's post about the incident spread across social media with viral force and resulted in condemnations of the restaurant and the staff.

An employee contacted Radio Facts, a broadcast industry blog, and said it was actually the customers who were being racist.

The woman, who would not be named, told the site that because Mr Brown and his friends were such a large group, it took longer than expected to find seats for all of them together. While they waited, some customers - both whites and blacks - were seated before they were, she said.

'They kept complaining about their long wait and were talking about how “whitey” was able to get seated, but they were not,' the woman wrote.

She added: 'They made this a racial issue before anything.'

As they waited, the group became rowdy, the employee claimed and began refusing to get out of the way for other customers to enter or leave the restaurant.

They also insulted a deaf girl because she did not move to let them through, the woman claims.

One member also repeatedly used the N-word. That was when the female customer in question became uncomfortable and complained to an employee, according to the woman.

'When asked to stop, he threw out a long string of racial epithets against one of my co-workers,' the employee claims.

That version of events is totally at odds with the description Mr Brown has given.

Just gonna' show up at a restaurant with 25 people and expect to get seated.

Anyone think to plan ahead and reserve a banquet room?

Now that the people in the country are getting over their love fest with homosexuals, it looks like being discriminated against is going to be “the next big thing.”

Kicked out for being a douchebag in a group of 25 douchebags. The fact that they were black douchebags is incidental....

It seems like they were looking for trouble and a payoff via lawsuit. I expect more of this crap in the future. Businesses should really think about investing in a camera system for cases like this.
I have a pain management practice and I have a camera system with audio in the waiting area and public areas. If we have a potential incident, I have a conference room with cameras for problem patients. It’s also good for employees.

Doesn't matter. There WILL be a lawsuit, and there WILL be an out-of-court settlement. That's what it's all about.

Winners: the patrons who were ejected, and their lawyers

Losers: the restaurant, race relations in the US, and respect for the truth

I've been to that specific establishment. I am not surprised they couldn't seat 25 people. Their dining area didn't seem to be that big without making special arrangements. That being said, when I went there the crowd was as diverse as any part of market street (not that diverse). I did see blacks served there without any issues including sitting around the bar right next to me. The staff seemed pretty attentive to everybody.

The wings are pretty good.

If they wanted to seat that many they should have tried the brewery down the main drag from Market. It seemed a lot more capable of handling a big party.

If you want a restaurant to seat a 25 person party at a Wild Wings, a Bennigans. a Chilis, etc, well then you use your f’n brain and you call ahead to make arrangements.

Just “showing up” and expecting the establishment to quickly accomadate your party is, frankly, quite stupid.

So what does the party then do? Do they wait for a suitable area to be assembled or do they get belligerant? Sounds like they got belligerant and then mouthed off to a reporter who just went with one side of the story.
