Send Your Kid to Private School? You Suck

(Newser) – Do you send your kids to private school? Then congratulations: "You are a bad person," Allison Benedikt argues in Slate. "Not bad like murder bad—but bad like ruining-one-of-our-nation’s-most-essential-institutions-in-order-to-get-what’s-best-for-your-kid bad. So pretty bad." Her reasoning is simple: if everyone were invested in public schools—and not just monetarily invested, "but real flesh-and-blood-offspring" invested—they would get better. Involved parents can make a huge difference. Yes, your kid may not get as excellent an education. "Take a deep breath and live with that."

"If you can afford private school," even just barely, "chances are that your spawn will be perfectly fine at a crappy public school." They have support at home, and a family with resources—"the exact kind of family that can help your crappy public school become less crappy." You want a fostering creative environment, small class sizes, individual student attention? So do the poor people down the street. "Send your kids to school with their kids," and then fight to make that school better. Click for Benedikt's full column.

Why should parents have to “fight” to make the school better? Why can’t school officials make it better without the need for a “fight”?

Yes. I should insert my innocent kids into a bad educational environment rife with drugs, deviant sexual behavior, and violence to uphold some airy-fairy notion of the greater good?

Thanks, but I'll stick with homeschooling. That makes me an even worse person.

"I’d love to put my kids in a public school that adheres to my morals and educational requirements. I can’t find one, and this idiot is the reason why."

When I was in college (1968-1973), the book "Teaching as a Subversive Activity" was all the rage, and teachers who imbibed that philosophy are now in control of the public schools. They are often EXPLICITLY hostile to the moral values, religious beliefs, and educational philosophy of parents.

Sending your children to private school may deprive them of liberal, GLBQT, Muslim, anti-Christian, anti-American indoctrination, where they sing hymns of praise to Obama. The fear is that they may be exposed to the Bible or the Constitution. Horrors!!!

So I must be really crappy. I spend 68 cents of every dollar of property tax to a school that I don't send my homeschooled kids too. Granted the school is not getting the extra kicker from the feds for "educating" my kids. ( I am a Veteran)

I look at as I am saving the school money. We educate our children 100% free of state funds, but still pay for the new school the county just built, that is four kids not sucking up resources in the local re-education camp.

"I spend 68 cents of every dollar of property tax to a school that I don't send my homeschooled kids too."

You raise an excellent point that critics of private education always miss - private schools are in fact an indirect subsidy for public schools. The tax dollars of private school parents are still funneled to the public schools that their children are not attending. You always hear people harping about the property tax breaks that church schools get, but those tax breaks are far outweighed by the tax savings resulting from the funding of the school through private resources.

My wife and I pay over$5000 per year in property taxes. A 10 year old boy from the neighborhood knocked on the door, selling magazine subscriptions to raise money for the local public schools to buy computers. I was stunned. I explained to him that our property taxes are supposed to fund those sorts of expenditures. I couldn’t believe that the school had kids out selling door to door!

Actually, he’s right. ANY school is a prison. So, I’m just going to take this as a plug for homeschooling and not get a headache.

One of the largest cohorts among private school parents are public school teachers.

e: if everyone were invested in public schools—and not just monetarily invested, “but real flesh-and-blood-offspring” invested—they would get better.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What is this? It reminds me of how the Muslims use their kids to make a political statement by wearing suicide bomb vests?

If a government program SUCKS fix it. Don't use **CHILDREN** as your front line troops in the battle.

Well....We **KNOW** that the liberal/Marxist/Progs are pro-death of children. Gee! Why not pro-child abuse, too!

Also...Fundamentally, there **ARE** government schools in this nation that are sooooooooo horrific and dangerous that it would be better for children to NEVER attend. I SERIOUSLY MEAN IT! No education would be better for the child than to attend some of these schools.

Illiteracy and innumeracy can be fixed. People do it all the time. Dead or permanently disabled can't be!

( Yeah! I am shouting, jumping up and down, and having a fit. I hate when children are used as front line troops in political battles. IT IS CHILD ABUSE!)
