He’s absolutely right. Furloughs, promotion freezes, even BAH cuts are running rampant with FY14 not looking any better. Now Dear Leader wants us to fight a war for Al Qaeda?
So you are not a boomer, but one of the generation that preceded us. You think us boomers didn’t recognize the Ponzi scheme. What could we do except vote for those who saw it as such? What did you do different? If you are not sending your SS check back and refusing your Medicare please don’t post sh*t. I know how much I would have if I hadn’t had to pay SS and Medicare. I wouldn’t need it either. However I ‘m not going to slam my fellow boomers for collecting.
Agreed. There is a lot that going on at FR and everywhere else in the country.
You can't carry both of these in your wallet and then attempt to logically argue we can afford our $70-100 Trillion unfunded liabilities.
"Mine" is earned, but "yours" is taking.
SS is a Ponzi scheme, especially the way it is operating today.
I am for a Simpson-Bowles type plan; without one, we are doomed economically, and soon.
It is amazing, isn't it?
Oh well, it isn't his blood or limbs on the line, nor his kids. Why should he care?
What I am doing different than you is not being a hypocrite who believes that his contributions cover the actual costs of these programs.
Why should I send my pension checks back and refuse Medicare? I receive a federal pension and minimum SS benefit from my previous military and civilian employment that comes to about $120 K a year, which is linked to a COLA. Conservatively, I estimate that I have received more than ten times the amount I contributed. In addition, the federal government still pays about $12K a year for my health insurance under the FEHBP, which is now supplementary to Medicare.
There is no doubt that there must be changes to the existing system. When they are made, even in they affect me adversely, I will not complain. Until then, I will accept all of the benefits that I am eligible for. But unlike you, I won't claim that I paid for them.
I know how much I would have if I hadnt had to pay SS and Medicare. I wouldnt need it either. However I m not going to slam my fellow boomers for collecting.
I didn't slam anyone for collecting. I was just pointing out that the current system is unsustainable and that anyone who believes that their contributions cover the benefits is dishonest and delusional.
Nobody is stupid enough to believe that eventually your withdrawals will outdo your contributions. What I was trying to say was I invested money during my working years. If I had the SS and Medicare money to invest along with my investment monies I would never have to bother the X, Y, Millennial or any other generation for contributions. My investments and SS contributions along with what you call interest but I call dividends and earnings would keep me in high cotton for as many years as I have left.
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts what a fine world we would have.
SS is an insurance scheme not an investment. The same holds true for Medicare. One third of Americans depend solely on SS for their retirement income. And for two-thirds of Americans, SS represents more than half of their retirement income. Most Americans have not saved for their retirement. The baby boomers and those that follow are for the most part going to experience tough sledding during their "golden years."
