Pope breaks with protocol by bowing to Queen Rania of Jordan
The Telegraph ^ | 8-31-2013 | Tom Kington

As head of state at the Vatican, not to mention the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, protocol requires visitors to bow to him when they meet him at the Holy See.

But Francis, who has made the forgetting of formalities a trademark of his papacy, bowed when he met a smiling Rania as she visited the Vatican with her husband King Abdullah II on Thursday.

"Up until the 19th century visitors would kiss the pope's shoes, and the tradition is still that all visitors, women included, bow to him, but Francis behaves as he did before he became pope and is not interested in protocol," a senior Vatican official told The Daily Telegraph.

It is not the first time the Pope has eschewed formality when receiving visitors.

When Cristina Kirchner, Argentina's president, met him in March, a day before his formal inauguration, he gave her a kiss after she presented him with a gourd for mate, the traditional Argentine tea.

"Never in my life has a Pope kissed me!", Mrs Kirchner said afterwards.

When she met the pope in July, Brazilian's first female president, Dilma Rousseff took the initiative, kissing Francis on both cheeks.

Francis' bow was just the latest in a series of signs the pope has no time for ceremony.

On Wednesday he showed up in central Rome for a religious ceremony in an unmarked Ford, without the papal flag or number plate, driven by a Vatican gendarme.

He then entered the church carrying his folded mitre tucked under one arm. The incident recalled his carrying a personal briefcase up the steps to the plane on which he flew to Brazil in July.

You really seem worked up about something, for some reason only known to you, but the article seems to cover the news.

Perhaps you just need another thread on a different news story.

Slambat did you get all that.

Don-o seems to be in some frenzy over this.

There must truly be something negative to this Pope bowing to the Mohammedan Queen judging by this lady who protests so much.

That refrain may be some people’s comment, but it isn’t everyone’s comment that objects to this. My objections had nothing to do personally with the Pope, if you actually read them.

The Vicar of Christ bowing to a Muslim woman can’t be a good thing.

Christ hung out with paupers and bums and the derelicts of society. He washed their feet. He humbled himself, He turned the other cheek. He came to us not be served, but to serve. The Pope is the Victor of Christ on earth.

Ok so they don’t have to bow. You know what I mean. I think
the word is subjugation.

By the way you forgot square dancing.

“And this is just like Obama? Did you forget your /s/?”

We’ll see but I think hes running rather moderate on the
issues. Is bowing to someone who looks at Christianity
as the enemy a gesture of submission or a turn the other
cheek and compromise? On the other hand a gay priest knows
he’s not supposed to be their, it goes against everything
he is their to teach. Yet he remains anyway. Why? I would
say it’s a personal conflict. Where does his faith truly
lye. If the Pope says they are to be forgiven, what for?
Just for being gay or being a gay priest?
I’m seeing a liberal trend with Francis. I guess I should
have said more like John Roberts than Obama.

Yeah! Square dancing, too! Another attenuated survival from a more courteous age.

And they waren't gender-confused, neither.
