At vigil for murdered toddler, Mayor Mitch Landrieu describes 'a drumbeat of death'

In 1994, a 9-year-old boy living in New Orleans' Central City neighborhood wrote a letter to President Bill Clinton, saying that he did not feel safe: "I want you to stop the killing in the city. People is dead and I think that somebody might kill me." Two days later, on Mother's Day, that boy, James Darby, was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Darby's words rang out as loudly as ever on Friday evening in the neighborhood where he lived and died, when Mayor Mitch Landrieu told Darby's story to a large crowd in front of the home where another child, 1-year-old Londyn Samuels, was shot and killed Thursday night.

"This ... baby was taken from us. You can't ever replace that," Landrieu told the hushed crowd. "It's a drumbeat of death that is taking the precious from us."

Landrieu echoed statements he has made to President Barack Obama and on national news during the past two weeks, describing a culture of crime in New Orleans that he says constitutes a public health crisis. He listed the names of four children in the past four years who have died at the hands of gun violence in Central City.

"The reason we know it can stop is that it has not always been this way. This is not who we are as people," Landrieu said. "This is where we live, this is not where we are supposed to die."

Life is cheap in NOLA and nothing ever changes. Liberal politics is king. They can’t bring themselves to do what has to be done.

as much as it grieves me to say it, until they start HELPING the police in their investigations and quit all this STOP SNITCHING crap, the police should quit wasting their time on 99% of the murders committed in the urban free fire zones... exceptions made only for children of tender age like this

How to make NOLA safe?

Evict 95% of the residents of downtown NOLA. But to where?

The problem is not in the water, not access to firearms, not low income, not because of descrimination. It is a cultural death of the soul. A terminal darkness of the heart.

Reality check ...

It IS who you are as people ... and if you can get your heads around THAT, you'll figure out the solution, pronto.

They had a chance a few years ago to shut the whole mess down; but they whined and cried and slung blame on Republicans instead.

The one thing you can always count on representatives of the Democratic [sic] party never to do is inconvenience criminals by enforcing laws.

Have you ever been there? Because I have, often, and I’m wondering in which ward I could find “downtown”?

03 I was driving back to FL crossing the Miss. bridge planning to exit down to the French Qtr. for the afternoon. Had the radio on I heard the mayor state that “he would not walk down Canal St. in daylight with his wife”. I took a pass and went on the FL.

The police force in that city is a joke

Grossly understaffed, underpaid, and not expected to do anything about preventing crime, just stopping by to haul away the bodies

The feds have it out for them as well, so they figure why bother

If the purpose of this vigil and speech was to press for more gun control, they can all shove it.

If the purpose was to tell a city full of gangbanging thugs enough is enough, well, okay then.
