Around 10:17pm Friday evening the WSPD released more detailed information regarding the shooting at Carver High School. Based on preliminary information, it was determined that this incident took place on school grounds just as a scheduled fire drill was ending. School Resource Officer T.R. Wilson was present and actively assisting students return to their classes. At some point, as students were returning, gunshots were heard and Officer Wilson saw Carver High student Christopher Lamont Richardson shooting at another student. Officer Wilson immediately drew his service weapon and challenged Richardson. Richards backed down and Officer Wilson was able to take him into custody.

Richardson has been charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession of Firearm on School Property, Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, and Discharging Firearm within city limits. His bond was set at $50,000. His court date is set for Sept 26th, 2013.

A 15 year old student sustained non-life threatening injuries as a result of this incident. The student was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment, and is currently listed in stable condition. No other information about this student will be released. Preliminary investigation indicates that this incident was the result of an on-going dispute between Richardson and the victim.

Also on Friday evening, Dr. Beverly Emory, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent, released a statement in which she praised the WSPD and Officer Wilson in particular. The released closed with the following:

This was a jarring and frightening afternoon. I want to thank the police department for their fast and thorough response – especially Carver’s SRO, Officer Wilson. I also want to thank the Carver staff and students for their part in maintaining their composure in a difficult situation.

The safety of our students is our top priority. We do everything we can to keep our students safe, but we also prepare for times like this. The professional and orderly response from our staff, students and police kept a dangerous situation under control.

I hope all of you have a safe and restful holiday weekend. Please join me in keeping the Carver family in your thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Beverly Emory’s full statement below:

Today we had a dangerous situation at Carver High School. While students were returning from a planned fire drill, one student fired a weapon. One student was struck, but our school resource officer took the shooter into custody before anyone else was hurt. The victim was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and thankfully the injuries are not life threatening.

At this point, Carver’s campus is secure, and the Winston-Salem Police Department is investigating the motives and reasons behind the shooting. We canceled tonight’s home football game at Carver simply as a precaution. School will be open on Tuesday, and we will have our crisis team ready for students and staff. Extra police officers will be Carver as well as patrolling schools throughout the district.
