You'd be amazed at the number of power plants built on faults (North Anna in VA, for instance), or on an actively eroding coastline (Lusby, MD). There are others, and though people were told....they just don't listen.

That's where I discovered most 'hearings' are just a formality, the decision has been made and the hearing is just so they can say the hearing was xx hours long and yy people testified, and that they are going to do what they wanted to do anyway.

Most plants can be sited to avoid such hazards, it is just more expensive to do so.

Thanks :) Boy is that a good explanation.

Well, I think the siting has everything to do with the massive cooling needs, and lots of water. Often riverbeds contain fault lines. That’s why I was asking about direct radiation to electric conversion, and less heat.

I understand the US Navy has a pretty good record on nuclear safety. Don’t they have some older ships that are becoming obsolete?

I’ll bet a decommissioned carrier could power up a coastal city AND become a good self-sustaining tourist attraction.

We don’t but I think you just gave Errant and Idea.....Work on that Buddy!....lol

As for the robotics, Errant. While Japan is leading the way in research and development they are woefully behind in production practicality.

I'm TOO errant to manage a ping list. Besides, it's machogirl's idea! ;)

they are woefully behind in production practicality.

South Korea or even China come to mind with collaboration and Japanese design. The world needs to come together and fix this!

You're welcome. Hope that answer wasn't too short. Basically, all of the reactors and pools start melting down, burning and possibility even going critical a time or two. There are a half dozen reactors in that location and numerous fuel storage pools as well. If the radiation gets too high, the area will have to be abandon and eventually the cooling pumps stop, then the meltdowns begin occurring.

It would be a tremendous catastrophe, not only for Japan, but the entire world.

“...see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass...”

You wouldn't believe how many times I repeat that line to myself too, when things are just too crazy to believe.

Do you have a link to the video you mentioned?

Thanks,

Why couldn't they create a controlled EMP inside a containment vessel, a sort of shielded rotating cylinder, which has slots or windows in it that alternately "flashes" the radiation at a transducer/antenna?

A nuclear EMP is a geophysical effect on scale of the entire planet. Perhaps E1 components can be duplicated in a lab using a highly energetic gamma ray source; but far more energy could be recovered by not doing any of that :-)

But that's not going to happen again...is it?

Sorry so long in replying.
I am trying to find the actual radio broadcast link we listened to. Ran across show through luck—had never heard of him before, and his guest just kept us on the edge of our seats..(I misspelled his name-it’s Bob Tuskin-—not “Tusken”.) We were listening to it on Friday night, but I think it was a re-broadcast.

I will continue to try and find the link to the audio we heard. (wish my better half had bookmarked it.)

If I find it, I’ll send it to you thru Freepmail.

Many thanks!

My better half is attempting to find the audio for me...

But, while we wait, I ran across this site:

#Fukushima I Nuke Plant: RO Waste Water Tank That Leaked Had Been Moved from Another Area After Ground Sank

http://ex-skf.blogspot.com/2013/08/fukushima-i-nuke-plant-ro-waste-water.html

I remember the guest (the one with the nuclear background) mentioning something about how they had “lost” some of the rods...LOST! I think that’s when our blood pressure went up.

(I hope I can send you the link to the audio soon.)

Hope that answer wasn't too short.

It was shorter than I had hoped. Still appreciated though.

Basically, all of the reactors and pools start melting down, burning and possibility even going critical a time or two.

I do not understand what "GOING CRITICAL" means. That's why I am asking.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

To rescue Errant here....lol

What could theoretically happen is there is a real possibility that what is contained in Fukushima could go live again. Meaning an uncontrolled Nuclear Reaction.

That possibility increases with their evident lack of radiation containment.

If you gin up a ping list, I’d like to be on it, even thought I really don’t want to be on it. This is bad.

This was my facebook post a few minutes ago....so MachoGirl it’s time for you to have your first List....lol

Okay...a Fukushima update. Been a few years....lol

Last week you all might have read of the storage tank leaking on property that released contaminated fluids into the ground water. While bad the water was not extremely radioactive.

Today however TEPCO the owner of the now cursed Diiachi reactor complex reported a new radiation leak that is extreme. 1800 milisieverts am hour. Such a reading produces death within four hours.

Here’s the issue though. If the contamination becomes so risky as it would be impossible for TEPCO to send in workers then something very very bad could occur.

Three of the reactors that were damaged from the earthquake and tsunami must be hand cooled with water. That water must be exchanged then stored and it is these storage tanks that have overwhelmed the property. The simply have run out of room for them. The tank construction was sent out to bid so the contract is the cheapest of those that submitted a proposal. So they leak and they leak a lot.

So here’s the danger for the UNITED STATES.....

The reactors if not maintained will overheat and become exposed. So not only is there a real possibility now of what is called the CHINA SYNDROME where by the reactors completely melt, but there is enough heat contained in at least two to start an uncontrolled nuclear reaction.

Despite what is happening in the Middle East this issue must now be brought to everyone’s conscience and we now must demand IAEA involvement.

That item is asinine, and obviously the main cause of the current problem.

Stupid stupid stupid.

Who's the Einstein proudly wearing this decision?

Here ya go a little tidbit from the Article but I encourage you to read the entire piece....!

Tepco spokeswoman Mayumi Yoshida said a joint venture of Taisei, Shimzu and Hazama Ando won the first contract to build storage tanks at Fukushima in April 2011. She declined to say whether the contractors built the tank that began to leak. Tepco has not identified the cause of the leak, and has consistently declined to give details on the value of contracts it has awarded or winning bidders, citing a need to protect “corporate secrets”. The Fukushima decommissioning is projected to cost at least $11 billion and take at least 30 years to complete.

Taisei, which built the structure around Japan’s newest reactor at Tomari in Hokkaido in 2009, was heavily involved in the construction of the Fukushima tanks, according to three people involved, who asked not to be named. Workers and engineers at Fukushima have been put on an “emergency” footing to work on the storage tanks this week, they said.

Shimizu, which also has experience in building nuclear plants in Japan, had technology needed to build the bolted tanks and brought in experts, one of the sources said.

Taisei said it could not comment on individual client projects. Shimizu and Hazama Ando decline
