John Kerry to Democrats: Munich moment By: John Bresnahan and Seung Min Kim and Jonathan Allen September 2, 2013 01:29 PM EDT
Secretary of State John Kerry told House Democrats that the United States faced a Munich moment in deciding whether to respond to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government.
In a 70-minute conference call on Monday afternoon, Kerry derided Syrian President Bashar Assad as a two-bit dictator who will continue to act with impunity, and he urged lawmakers to back President Barack Obamas plan for limited, narrow strikes against the Assad regime, Democratic sources on the call said.
Kerrys derisive comments on Assad and his reference to the 1938 Munich agreement between Adolf Hitler and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain - after which Chamberlain infamously declared it would lead to peace for our time - showed the hard line the White House is taking in its drive for congressional approval of the Syrian resolution. Top administration officials argue that a failure by the United States to respond to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime would only lead to more violence and instability in the region.

Kerry derided Syrian President Bashar Assad as a two-bit dictator who will continue to act with impunity,
Then Kerry looking confused asked “ Did I just say Assad? because I was thinking Obama”.
I’m surprised Lurch can spell “Munich”. Much less understand what it meant.
A yea vote will have the media blaming republicans for sending us to war and a no will have the media say that republicans support murdering innocent women and children.
Either way Obama is going to Syria and assisting alqaeda and the Muslim brotherhood. That was the plan all along. Only reason to get congress involved is so they can be a scapegoat for the outcome.
Excellent point
He is referencing the ‘38 Munich. He thinks that if we fail to stop Syria now, Assad will turn into a megalomaniac, bent on world domination.
Yes, I know it is just silly to read that.
He should call in some Neo Cons...those guys can put together a show and start a War.
Where he sees 1938...I kind of see 1898—and the start of the Spanish American War. The folks in DC are just itching to launch some tomahawks.
OT - what is going on with Kerry’s face?!
Still trying to understand the Munich comparison. Now who is Hitler and who is chamberlain in this comparison?
Jews?
Too bad Kerry didn't take such a strong stand when we were already in a shooting war with Iraq and with the Taliban. Does anyone else find this hypocrisy staggering, even for Democrats?
I'd be more surprised if he can pronounce it.
Munish Khan?
That’s a good point. I’m sure it’s seared into his memory, though.
When he referred to a two-bit dictator I though he was speaking about Obamao...
Every Congresscritter should vote PRESENT on any resolution, kicking the can back to Obama.
Ashad as become Hitler.
assad is not hitler.
Very true, no one could have imagined the effects modern weapons would have on the battlefield, they were thinking of the Franco-Prussian war, that it would end quickly.
So John Kerry a traitor who stabbed his fellow soldiers in the back now wants to play war hero. Screw you you rotten bastard.
Sounds like he wants a “Needs to be made a fool of” moment. I wouldn’t be referencing Munich when trying to create a diplomatic solution to anything.
