Syria Prepares for U.S. Attack
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 2, 2013 | SAM DAGHER

DAMASCUS, Syria—The Assad regime prepared for a U.S. attack on the capital despite a likely delay in any military action, urging civilian evacuations, moving soldiers into vacant apartments and issuing new threats of retaliation.

A senior Syrian official on Monday said that both the Syrian army and its ally Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite group, would strike back in the event of a U.S.-led offensive by first hitting American warships now in the Mediterranean Sea.

Referring to Hezbollah as the resistance, Khaled Abboud, a parliament member and confidant of President Bashar al-Assad, told The Wall Street Journal: "The resistance and the armed forces are now one body. In my assessment, Hezbollah will side with Syria in certain operations targeting warships in the Mediterranean."

The Assad government's preparations continued despite President Barack Obama's move last week to seek congressional authorization to attack after Washington and opposition groups alleged that Damascus killed more than 1,400 people last month in a chemical-arms attack.

i would not like to have our sailors targeted with russian anti ship missiles.

we will lose sailors and ships.

i’m thinking not even close to worth the risk

So what if you lose the Nimitz? Will that be enough for a backlash against the Mulsim Brotherhood President?

Easier said than done to attack US warships. I have no doubt these Russian ASMs are fierce, but they need to first acquire a lock like everything else.

Hope B. Hussein O. has contingency plans if warships are successfully attacked. Even better, I hope he has an offense to ward off attacks on US warships.

I'll not be surprised if he hasn't prepared sufficiently for contingencies/scenarios.

On the other hand, an undeniable demonstration of our Navy’s continued dominance would send a strong message to our enemies- **** you and your missiles, we still own the seas.

I have a tendency to agree with you....but, this whole thing could escalate out of control and cause the U.S. big big problems.

First, we are already broke financially as a nation. Another multi-billion dollar war would just pile on top.

Were not playing around with a bunch of war amateurs here. These people would look to broaden the scope by attacking Israel and possibly attempt to sink one of our surface vessels....what if?

Are we prepared to open up another war front?

How bout the Iranians attacking Israel? What then? Spiking energy prices here at home sending the economy spiraling, stock market corrections, possible attacks on our own soil through sleeper cells that infiltrated through the Southern border. I mean these are real scenarios.

But then, if the message is “Al Quaida owns the seas”, it might not be what you wanted yo project.

He'll have a "legacy" then for certain.

They'll blame it on Bush.

You have stealth carriers? Who knew?

Actually, some asm’s don’t really require a lock.

He who hesitates is lost. Hand wringing is never good. It’s a sign of weakness and fear. Crushing your enemies, on the other hand, is always good. It’s a sign of dominance. Are we weak and afraid or are we dominant?

If we won’t even meet them on the seas, then they already own the seas. We can pull our carriers back beyond the range of ASBMs and use the Airforce from ground bases per our normal SOP.

I'm with ya. I hate all this involvement around the world, but if you go in...go in ALL the way.

Break the enemies will to fight. Carpet bomb night and day until they peak out of their foxholes with arms raised.

These liberals make me nauseous. Pussy footin around, getting thousands of our troops killed.

If they fire from a mosque...level the mosque. We have the power and might to bring these muzzie heathens to their knees.

If you go in half baked...I say, don't go in at all.

Nope. The media and Obama worshipers will blame on Bush. The Obama voters will believe them. Obama skates.

"Break the enemies will to fight."

Right. I agree. But in this instance who is the enemy?
Has Syria attacked the United States?

Basically it is Obama's big mouth and ego that has put the USA on the spot. He want's to go down in history as a "hero". And have statues of his image carved and erected to him. And have a holiday dedicated to him. Basically the guy want's to be worshiped as a god.

Even if they are fire and forget you would need to spam a single ship with dozens. At the same time you’re assuming Aegis/SLQ-32 does nothing as well.
