A man roused from his sleep by an intruder hid in a bathroom and called police before confronting the intruder and shooting him in his home in west Albuquerque on Thursday afternoon, police said.
The wounded intruder was able to make his way to the resident’s backyard, where he collapsed on the homeowner’s lawn, Albuquerque police spokesman Simon Drobik said.
The suspected intruder was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in critical condition, but he was expected to survive, Drobik said.
No identities were being released. A neighbor said the resident appeared to be middle-aged.
Police were also looking for a woman, who is wanted for questioning as a “person of interest,”, Drobik said.
The woman was seen by the homeowner waiting in a truck outside the home in the 9500 block of Sundoro Place NW, in a neighborhood near Ladera and Unser NW.
The homeowner told police he was asleep around noon when he heard noises from someone coming into the house through a back door. The resident told police he went in a bathroom and called 911.

Robles [homeowner] was telling a dispatcher that someone was breaking into his house when a confrontation began, [ABQ police spokesman] Drobik said.The burglar was a career criminal who together with his wife [driver of the truck which backed up to the home's front door] have extensive criminal records, mainly for burglary and theft. The wife is still on the run.“The next 10 seconds is crucial because there was some type of confrontation between him and the offender, and that’s when a shot was fired, and that was recorded as they were on the line,” Drobik said.
Detectives are reviewing the 911 call to determine whether there was a verbal exchange or any other evidence, Drobik said.
No charges have been brought against Robles in connection with the shooting, Drobik said. The case will be handed to the District Attorney’s Office for review, he said.
