'Syrian Electronic Army' Hacks Marines Website

Pro-Assad computer hackers today broke into the Marine Corps recruiting website, redirecting visitors to a screed that called President Barack Obama "a traitor who wants to put your lives in danger to rescue al- Qaida insurgents."

A Marine Corps spokesman confirmed that the site, marines.com, was tampered with and redirected temporarily, but no information was put at risk.

It sounds like they didn't actually attack the Marine's website. The article says: "redirected", which I suspect means they actually changed the DNS entry.

That's maintained elsewhere, by a registrar (not a government agency). If you can break into THEIR system (or simply masquerade as a legitimate user), you tell it: "marines.com is over here, instead".

Has anyone heard on Fox news recently that it was also suspicioned that the stock market shut down for a few hours last week was caused by suspected Syrian hackers more or less shooting a cybershot across our bow to let Washington know that if they think they are going to take action against Syria that it won't be without profound impacts to us as well?

My wife said that's what she understood Fox news to say the other day.
