Syria's 2-1/2-year conflict between Assad's forces and the rebels seeking to oust him has killed over 110,000 people, most of them civilians, according to the Observatory, which uses a network of activists across the country.

I have a couple of problems with that statement. How does one define "Civillians" in this sort of conflict? After all, the jihadis aren't wearing uniforms so if a dead jihadi is found without a weapon within reach, instant civilian.

I'm also suspicious of "activist" provided numbers.

Assad is winning. Why would he launch a chemical attack? The rebels would be the ones who would benefit by it looking like he did.
