North Carolina law makes it illegal for police to destroy guns
NBCNews ^ | Sept 5, 2013 | M. Alex Johnson

North Carolina this week became the third state to forbid law enforcement from destroying unclaimed firearms and weapons collected in gun buybacks.

In many states, weapons seized in criminal investigations or buybacks are destroyed — recycled or shredded into tiny pieces of metal — unless they're evidence in a crime or useful for law enforcement purposes, like officer training.

Other states allow authorities to sell them to federally licensed firearms dealers for resale, as long as they're in safe working order. That usually has to happen with the approval of a judge, as was the case in North Carolina — until now.

So would Wilmington police, said Linda Rawley, a spokeswoman for the department, who told WUNC radio: "It's always been safest for us to be able to destroy them.

So I assume the department has destroyed all of theirs? Or did you mean it's safer [for you] if you destroy everyone else's?

I read a number of comments at the article. Many are truely bizzare, as numerous emotional anti-freedom rants simply ignore the facts, ignore market forces, ignore reason and logic.

The pro-freedom forces are better at reason and logic, but the antis just ignore them.

The reasons given to allow public servants to destroy valuable assets are absurd:

The police should be able to do what they want. (bizzare, they work for us. We are their masters, not the other way around)

Reducing guns available reduces gun violence. (again, bizzare, it ignores that guns are valuable assets. Destroying used guns simply drives up demand for new guns. It ignores the whole “more guns less crime” paradyme that seems much closer to reality than more guns equals more crime)

Guns are penis substitutes. (an old leftist favorite, with nothing to back it up except the projection of sex crazed leftists, that has *nothing* to do with rational argument)

The NRA is for it, it must be bad. (Name calling and demonization, no rational basis)

Guns are bad, bad, bad. (Emotional blather)

Guns are religious icons. (Emotional blather)

These people are so blinded by their false assumptions about reality, that perhaps the best that can be done is to poke fun at them using facts. At least lurkers reading the comments can then see their infantile arguments and will get a little exposure to reality.

this is where cops get their “ham sandwiches” from.

ham sandwich being their term for ‘throwaway gun’.
