Not all Marines were grunts. Many were clerks and repair technicians who rarely ever got in the field.
He got hit from behind - I imagine he was thinking his presence would put them off and, like most bullies, they would back down at the first sight of aggression. Not true with today’s punks - if they hadn’t knocked him out they would have got a few cheapies in then ran - fact that they got him from behind means that they could then pummel him. Some young men are so weak nowadays they don’t believe they might have to take a punch to be in a fight.

Veterans, when faced with the use of deadly force, learn to go for the knees, insteps, eyes, temples, throat, etc. Do some heavy bag work with hands, fingers, elbows, head and feet.

I got my a$$ handed to me a while back because I for got that after a few decades of experience being 18 years old your reflexes slow down some. I have to think that there are astonishingly rare people under 30 who would fit this kind of mold of what real, traditional men are about. Anytime someone is attacked or a shooting/terror attack occurs or what not it always seems like it is considered such a colossally huge deal anytime there are people in their 20s or younger and they do anything to be proactive instead of just helplessly waiting for an intervention. I feel like there simply has to have been a time in American history when, even if something like a mass shooting or a gang attack or a terror attack happened, it was expected that would be proactive in trying to stop it or prevent people from getting hurt or killed. Maybe not trying to rush or charge the attackers for most people but at least do SOMETHING to protect yourselves and others. At least once you got to be 18/19 or older, anyway. And if you didn’t, it meant you were cowardly, spineless, unprincipled and obscenely passive.
