What to Do About Syria
Weekly Standard ^ | Sep 16, 2013 | Fred Kagan

Posted on 09/08/2013 6:51:15 AM PDT by nuconvert

American interests in Syria are clear: preventing terrorists from acquiring chemical weapons; depriving Iran of its most important ally and staging-base in the Middle East; and preventing al Qaeda from establishing an uncontested safe haven in the Levant.

Reasonable people can disagree about the extent to which President Obama’s proposed “limited strike” will secure these interests, but not about whether the interests are real or vital. Bashar al-Assad has one of the largest chemical weapons arsenals in the world. Al Qaeda franchises control territory in Syria and have some of the most effective fighting forces on the ground. Iran’s own military and security forces are active in Syria in defense of the Assad regime. The threat to Americans is very real.

Not a single thing.

This country’s main concern is its treasonous government and its sinister schemes.

They are not out to help anyone other than themselves.

What to Do About Syria

Only two possible right answers:

1. Pray.

2. Nothing.

Maybe if the US would stop supplying weapons, logistics, and training to the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaeda affiliates in Syria, the disaster would not be as bad.

None of which Obama wants to do. Obama just wants a “surgical” limited strike. Obama has no intention of really achieving any of the so called “American interests.”
Obamas intention is to subjugate Congress and derogate ALL of the War Powers of the USA to himself. Obama is a fascist.

Obama wants a diversion from the issues of Benghazi, Fast and Furious, IRS abuse of COnservatives,NSA invasion of privacy, and Obamacare debacles.

Deny Obama the diversion and
make public the total anti constitutional idiocy of the Obama fascist policies.

Let the Shiites and Sunnis kill each other off in their battle for Mecca. Why should we be doing the Saudi bidding, doing the step and fetch for Prince Ibn Blanckety Blank Saud? We should be cheering them on as these Islamists fight each other, and we should be arming Israel to the teeth.

Watch closely as Obama continues to betray traditional allies of the USA, which is why Obama will have no coalition to attack Syria, and which is why Putin has managed to put a leash on Obama.Putin is actually more of an American than Obama is.

Obama needs to be gotten rid of.

These are not mutually exclusive...

3. Use it as a bludgeon issue to whack at the ‘resident and his merry regime, given that the facts are completely devoid from their court

I question how much the locals appreciate our efforts.

After rescuing them from the mass attacks, will they be thanking the US or will they be cheering in the streets next time US interests are attacked and Americans die?

How much do the people of Afghanistan and the Iraqis appreciate the gift of freedom that we gave to them. A costly gift to us both monetarily and American lives.

If there is even a question, then I say we stay out.

obama sits by while hundreds of clacks are killing eachother in Chicago. Seems Syrians are more important to him. If he can’t help the black people in this country, then leave the Syrians to kill eachother.

We should stay OUT of Syria.

We should do nothing! Let them kill each other, it doesn't matter which "side" you help in the end they are all the enemy.

obama wants to do one thing, install a muslim brotherhood gov't...

We are at War and the president of The United States is on the wrong side.

I say NO MORE American resources to or for people that hate us. It is a Mid-east problem let them solve it. Billions in aid to these haters for their military, so let them use it to solve THEIR problem.

From what I am seeing on the Sunday talking head shows, the tactic will be to play the CIA-approved videos of the people suffering Sarin gas as incentive to convince us that intervention is necessary.

Chemical weapons are bad. Assad used Napalm in the civil war, too. Add "Agent Orange" and he'll be right up there with many other nations.

I think it should be mandatory that there needs to be equal time of videos showing our "friends" in Syria beheading people, killing Syrian soldiers, cutting them open, and eating their organs. I think we need to see pictures of the "vetted rebels" taking people off a bus and beheading all of them including an infant.

Kerry indicates it is OK to have about 25% al-Qaeda membership within the "vetted opposition" in Syria, and they deserve our support. Would he then think that about 5 of the 19 9-11 hijackers were "nice guys"?

Are we really going to war (or even popping off a few Cruise Missiles) over a few hundred people who were gassed, while turning a blind eye to all other atrocities - on both sides - of this civil war?

There are no good guys in any of this.

Some unanswered questions:
* Who manufactured the Sarin gas? Where did it come from? If it was manufactured in Syria, who provided the necessary chemicals to make Sarin?
* What role does Russia play in the shell-game of hiding the balance of the WMDs? Should it be assumed that the stockpiles are now at schools, hospitals, and residential areas, setting us up for being blamed killing too many (more than 400) people as collateral damage? How will that help our standing in the world?
* What happens the day after we attack? NO ONE CAN ANSWER THIS.
* After Assad does a victory lap by surviving the pin-prick, why would he want to negotiate for stepping down as leader of Syria like McCain has been discussing.

We....are....so....screwed......

"Since clearly neither Hezbollah nor al Qaeda is a trustworthy custodian, and since the United States has no desire to send the military force that would be necessary to destroy or remove the weapons, the only hope of managing Syria’s chemical weapons threat lies with the success of the FSA. The United States and the international community should make it a condition of support for the FSA and for any government they might support after Assad’s fall that it agree to abide by the chemical weapons bans (to which Assad’s regime is not a party) and to hand over seized stockpiles at once to American or other international forces for destruction. There is no reason to think that the FSA would resist such a demand. Offering more meaningful aid would make it more enticing."

This is the thesis paragraph of Kagan's article and it doesn't pass the "Common Sense" test, as it relies too heavily on the FSA giving their word to Infidels and then keeping it. Al Qaeda, by this time, has surely infiltrated the FSA to the point that we would be taking the word of al Qaeda that they will turn over to the U.S. all chemical weapons they seize at the conclusion of this Civil War.

I certainly don't have a solution to the current debacle in the Middle East, but my advice to my fellow Americans is to stay out of all Muslim domestic disturbances until they pose a clear threat to U.S. national security; at which time we hit them with a decisive strike that permanently removes that threat.

One can only hope the American people haven't become too civilized to survive in this uncivilized world.
