You think our power grids are safe from the effects of an EMP? As I understand it, it is the power grid as well as the non-shielded electronics that are used by critical infrastructure which are believed to be so vulnerable and dangerous.

On what do you base your belief that the Norks couldn’t deliver? We know that in December of 2012 they put a 200-pound package into orbit directly to our south. What makes you believe that it’s NOT an EMP, against what Peter Vincent Pry has said?

A quick addition to my response to what you asked in post #55. Specific to the possibility of the North Korean's setting up a orbiting nuclear device, where it could be detonated over some area of the USA.
Food for thought perhaps that may be a valid point. And beyond that, I am not prepared to go into a long debate.

The Chinese need the USA in tack and in the mode to continue to support their economic growth. That is a no brainer.
Would the Chinese give the NORC permission to screw things up over here, with a EMP attack.
They need us more then we need them from an economic view point. And they have quite a bit invested in the USA in T notes, and other investment derivatives.
That is partly why I hesitate to discuss things of this nature.

NORKS are noted for mini subs torpedoing boats, rockets that aren’t that accurate, hungry people and crazy leaders.

And we could easily Nukem from Orbit. Right of the face of the earth.

Power grids? Yes, they could be damaged. But, I am convinced the threat is not as big as it is described. Will Freep mail you on that.

I read somewhere that for right now there are about 5,000 critical transformers that could be replaced that would help in negating the effect of a EMP attack on our national infrastructure.
Yes, personal items like people's sensitive electronics would go to crap but if those 5,000 transformers were replaced with harden ones with ones that could handle a EMP attack our country would not be in such dire straights as it is now.
If only we had listened to Thomas Edison and developed a DC infrastructure and generated our power locally.
A infrastructure that would have towns and cities generate their electricity locally and not over long distance AC power lines that need transformers to step down the voltage.
When you look at your TV ? radio ? smaller electronics ? they actually run off of DC.
The AC power that goes into those devices is converted into DC by a transformer inside your TVs radios and a AC to DC rectifier.
Running things off of DC also would save energy because converting AC to DC you lose efficiency, along with heat. Your more heavy current devices run off of straight AC.
