Why is 'Duck Dynasty' so popular?

"For the life of me, I can't figure out why people are so attracted to our family," writes Phil Robertson. And that was before Duck Dynasty, the Robertson family's reality show, smashed records for a nonfiction cable program when 11.8 million viewers checked out the season premiere in mid-August.

Phil, as nearly everyone calls him, is the bearded, 67-year-old progenitor of the backwoods Louisiana clan that made it big selling duck calls and found its way into millions of other American homes through the previous three seasons of Duck Dynasty.

The A&E network bills the show as "funny, functional, and family-filled." In the realm of reality shows, that's a surprising reversal of the formula for success. Standard reality fare is "friction and fits of rage and four-letter words," as the second of Phil's four sons, Jase, described it in an interview.

It's also a surprising reversal in the story of a family whose earlier chapters weren't so "happy, happy, happy" - as Phil likes to refer to life now. The catchphrase supplies the title of his autobiographical book. In it, Phil recounts a miserable episode early in his marriage to "Miss Kay" when his drinking and all-night partying almost ruined the lives of the whole family.

"I think Americans are starting to miss the old pre-”diversity” and pre-”multicultural” America."

I hear ya, bet cha' that "multi-cultural" Allen West or even worst that Canadian border jumper Ted Cruz aren't fans of Duck Dynasty. Don't even get me started on that affirmative action "conservative" Clarence Thomas. Ah the good old days, you know before "those people" were allowed to fight and die for our country. Let's go to Arlington National Cemetery and exhume the pre-"diversity non traditional Americans" from the ground they died defending. You got a shovel?

DD is also popular because it is a continuation of shows like The Beverly Hillbillies and I Love Lucy and the comedy of The Three Stooges wherein the actors are bound to get into troublesome situations. There is a lot about DD that reminds me of old Jewish comedy. It may seem unscripted and ad libbed but the timing of the comedy is perfect...and I suggest that is by design.

What's to attack? He changed, they survived and prospered.

That's inspirational, not a negative. (If he can do it, maybe you can, too. Especially if that situation sounds familiar. You might not become a multimillionaire, but getting your world back together is priceless in itself.)

There was so much hype at my daughter’s high school that she didn’t think she would like it because it seemed overblown.

I finally got her to watch an episode last season and now she is hooked.

And for the record, I have a crush on Jace, LOL. His dry humor cracks me up.

True dat. But we could fill a record thread with things the Left doesn't understand...(Like the sun makes Earth hot, water runs downhill, gravity sucks--literally. too easy...)

It is the people who will understand who will get the message. the rest might as well be trying to read cuneiform.

Jace had a great comment when he was “escorted” out of the Trump International Hotel in New York after asking an employee where the Restroom was.

He said he was “facially profiled”. I doubt his comment was scripted. It was a real life moment. Beards and Camo don't impress New Yorkers, but the Robertson money surely does.

They are Rich Folks who only act Rich in their Faith.

BTW - Jace also went out of his way to defend the Hotel Employee, saying he probably would have done the same if he was in his shoes.

Then we had Oprah, the abused Billionaire Black Woman who was dissed by the Swiss Sales Clerk. Oh the humanity.

Just shows you the difference between real people, even those with a Reality TV Show, and the Elite Liberal Hollywood Crowd who imagine they are the center of the Universe. The Robertsons know who IS the Universe.
